This is a hot topic with no real answer. Everyone has their own opinion on what is the best music format. Quality wise nothing beats wav and pcm as their uncompressed and take up about 50 MB each file. Obviously if you have a portable music player your files need to be compressed. MP3 is the most popular but may not be the best. As other people on this forum will tell you if it wasnt for the Lame project mp3 wouldnt be as widely used as it is. Anyway seeing as your a newbie to all this stuff I would recommend MP3. The best program to use would be Exact Audio Copy. This is the guide which will tell you where to download from, setup and configure.

And this will give you the best method of what bitrate to encode your mp3's at

If you need any help with anything at all just ask.
