This is my first post at this baord and hope you guys can help me out. I am fairley new to the a/v end of electronics, but hope to learn a lot.

The shelf system I have has High and LOW outputs. And my sub woofer has high and low inputs. Only problem is that the all the outputs on the reciever are the wire type and on the sub the low level inputs are rca. I could just use the high level in and outputs, but I hear using the low level are better. So should I make a converter cable. One end have rca, and the other end have wire. I could just buy a sub woofer rca cable, cut it open and that would be the basic idea. Any oppinions? Ideas?
    Thsi is the sub:

The shelf system is Panasonic SC-AK45 360 watt.

Also, I am thinking of buying this reciever.

Will I be able to somehow wire up my shelf system to this reciever?

One last question:IS a cd player worth teh money, if I am going to buy a DVD player anyway, and the dvd player can play cds, mp3s, and more.

    Thanks you.

This is a scanned copy or a page in the shelf system manual.

    Hi Ross,
Your 'shelf system' has what is called a proprietary speaker setup. It is engineered to work only with the small satellites and bass unit supplied with it.
This refers to frequency; both are high-level signal.
    This refers to signal level.

So it seems you could connect the Low (frequency) output to the subwoofer's High (level) input, using speaker wire.
They warn you that the amp in the little unit will not drive current into a low impedance - few amplifiers will! But it says no lower than 6 ohms; hell, that's pretty standard. Some inexpensive amp's struggle when below 8 ohms. Your 'big' sub will probably present a similar load as the 'little' sub, so WTF, give it a try.
If the SC-AK45 is unhappy, it will trip-out or 'protect' when driven hard at high volumes.
Be really stingy with the sub volume. Since it will easily drown out the satellites, your music could quickly become very unbalanced or 'tubby'.
Also, it seems that the bass is handed-off to the sub at a fairly high frequency, so you should adjust the sub's low-pass filter to approx. 400Hz.
This is higher that typical 100-200Hz, and will have your sub reproducing the 4 lowest octaves of sound.
If any of this doesn't make sense to you: Ask ;-)
    Otherwise give it a go!
And, buy a DVD player - only a dickhead (or an audiophile) would buy a CD-only player these days.
