    Hi folks!

    AVI to DVD:

Okay, I'm no expert here but I've been using WinAvi to convert my .avi files to .vob. I click my advanced button and set the output to QUALITY rather than SPEED.
I've never had any problem with the finished product once conversion has been completed.
It takes on average around 15-30mins to convert.
Unfortunately being at work, I don't have my complete or exact settings for WinAvi but can give them to anyone wanting to know.
    ================================================

    DVD Menu:

Once I have my converted files in .VOB format, I then load these into TMPEGENC DVD Author 1.6. Design my menus with a few .JPG wallpapers of the same movie from the Net. Encode the movie and if possible, adjust your settings to more than just 1-PASS for better quality.
Takes a little longer, but if you want quality, you gotta give it more time. I also have the AC3 plugin so audio is in Dolby.

At the end of encoding you have the option to WRITE the DISC.
    Go for it!

(I have everything set to the highest quality possible for encoding)
    I'm using a : P4 2.8Ghz, 1Gig Ram, 128M Radeon 9800 PRO

Usually, the first thing you want to do is convert the AVI to MPEG or VOB format, both of which are DVD-compliant. I suggest you use the DivX/Xvid to DVD guide located in the Guides section of this site.

    Also, info we need:

What sort of DVD burner do you have, and is your firmware up to date?

What sort of DVDs are you using (brand and/or Manufacturer's ID, format [DVD-R, +R, etc.])?

What's the size of your AVI file, and is it encoded using Xvid/DivX? (This one's actually not that important)

Well, first off, I'd personally suggest using DivXToDVD to convert the AVI to VOB. Don't bother putting in chapters and subtitles unless you want to burn directly to DVD without authoring. (If you want quality, there are other programs you can use, but DivXToDVD is probably the fastest, AND it produces surprisingly good quality.)

Depending on how big your file is, it'll take anywhere from a few minutes (1-50 Mb) to a few hours (500+ Mb) to convert it to VOB. I'm taking a wild guess, but I'm gonna say your file is in the 700 Mb range or so.

After the file is converted, use whatever authoring program you want to create menus, add chapters, subtitles, etc. I personally like DVD-lab, but there's also TMPGEnc, Sonic, DVDMaestro (a good alternative to Scenarist), Scenarist (the most expensive and most complex), and probably a bunch of other ones.

...but you'll just have to experiment, really. Use what works best for you.

    thanks for the advice,
    first, i am using a philips dvd+rw DVD8316
    it is up to date
    i am using the cheap dvd-r (verbatim 1x-4x 4.7gb)
as you guessed the avi file is about 700mb
i am trying using sonic mydvd, when i try to burn the dvds it takes a while to decode the music and video. but then it gets stuck on 'writting dvd'

honestly, i am not really sure what the problem is. i have tryed pretty much everything, converting wise, and i think it might be the suck ass cheap dvds that i am using.

do i have to use dvd+rw?

thanks for all of your help

Yeah, I'm guessing you'll have to use either DVD+R or DVD+RW, since your DVD burner doesn't support -R.

    Another question:

Are you converting the file before you burn it? Sonic MyDVD isn't that good of a program to use for DVD authoring. (I've asked about this program in another thread, too - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/253652 )

You should also consider visiting this site to see just how good your blank media is: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm (Note: You'll need to know what your Manufacturer's ID is. Download DVD Identifier and use that to get all the info you could possibly want about the DVD media you're using.)

    Hope that helps.

when i use VSO DivX to DVD converter and it asks to burn w/ CopytoDVD i convert the files, but then i get an error when trying to burn that says: please place (re)writable media into the tray,

so i guess it's the wrong dvds?

    i need dvd rw?

    thanks

Okay, I'm going to add my $.02 questions here.

I have AVI files. I seem to be able to convert them fine. But the problem I'm seeing is that the video looks a little jerky - kind of like where you've seen some of these syndicated tv shows where they have compressed it to get more commercials in (the sound is fine). You can see the problem most where there is a lot of movement or large images are moving quickly.

I've read a LOT of posts, downloaded various converters and they all see to give the same result above. Here are my questions, gleaned from all my research:

    1. Could the framerate of the original AVI be a problem? I've not tried looking at them in a program I've read about called GSPOT (I've downloaded it, but not used it).

    2. Is there some conversion that needs to be made to go from a slower framerate like 24fps (etc.) to play on a standalone at 29.97 fps?

    3. Following up: Some posts I've read say you should keep the same frame rate. But does that contribute to the slight stuttering of the video?

    4. I've read in one place that the audio track carries the TBC. Is this why many guides have you split the audio from the video? Most others don't seem to explain exactly WHY you should do this(?). Would just splitting the two (and perhaps convert the audio to another format) make the resultant silent video run smoother? In which case, you could re-combine them in an authoring program (in my case, Nero 6.6)>

    5. Which conversion guide on the web is the clearest? There are a dizzying number of them, but they mostly seem to point to TMPGENC.

    6. What is the major cause of the "blocky" areas of black on videos I've either converted or captured? I suspect it has to do with bitrates, which I've tried to understand, but have trouble grasping.

Answers to these questions might put all the pieces of the puzzle I've gathered together properly.

    Thanks!

I don't have alot of experience yet, but I cannot get a stutterless video when I convert it to a DVD. I am not sure about separating the audio and video, and then processing them separately. I do know that when I converted a PAL DVD to NTSC, I had audio sync issues. processing the components separately seems to make that likelihood greater. You might end up with great video, but it will be like a dubbed Chinese movie. :(

    Hi there,
I was wondering if someone could give me some feedback on how to do this:

I have downloaded Top Gear episodes, and now I want to put them on DVD so that I can watch them on my DVD player. The files are in DivX. I tried using the leatest Nero, and I can fit 5 episodes (5 hours) on a single layer disc. But it starts to encode, and then the system crashes. I have two questions:

    1. What is the easiest way to turn DivX videos into DVDs, and multiple files like in my case on one single layer disc?

    2. How many hours can I fit on a single layer disc and still retain some sort of quality?

    Thanks in advance

    risci

Ok guys, I'm at my very wits end with this thing and I need help.

I was trying to find a relatively easy, free, and painless way to convert avi files into svcd format so I could burn them to dvds.

I stumbled upon a guide on this site for doing just that at...

    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/avi_to_dvd_avi2dvd.cfm

It seemed simple enough... However, when my transcoded file was sent over to HCEnc, I received errors in the input field. I thought perhaps that I was missing a codec, so I downloaded the last version of Nimo and installed what codecs I thought I might be missing. I transcoded the file again in the AVI2DVD program, and when it was sent to HCEnc this time, I received an error from windows XP telling my that MPEG2 codec has performed an illegal operation and must close, which of course also closes HCEnc.

I can't seem to find a fix for the mpeg 2 codec problem, or ultimately get this to work.

    I'm running windows XP
    2.8 Ghz Pentium D
    gig of ram
DVD decrypter to burn the dvd (which I know works)
    Burning with a DVD+RW drive

And I'm trying to combine a avi file with a srt subtitle file, into one file, change it to svcd and then burn it onto a playable dvd disc.

Oh, and I'm using Memorex 4.7gb dvd+rw discs.

I hope that is everything that needs to be known. Thanks in advance.

I'm coming to the conclusion, after researching some more, is not a conversion problem, per se, but that the issue may be frame rate. I'm still fuzzy about how that works. But I read on the anime forums, that the fansubs there are typically 23.xx (24)fps. But I understand that DVDs are 29.97 fps(?). So what I don't quite grasp in all this info is how to convert these AVIs so that they are smooth. Maybe they can't be, becasue that's how they were uploaded. Live action TV shows may be another matter.

I've read something about a 3:2 inverse pulldown on some encoders. No idea what they actually do. Can someone give me a little enlightenment here?

I've done a lot of conversion and the program I use (VSODivxtoDVD) automatically compensates for frame differences between mpeg4 (avi) and mpeg2 (dvd).
