i have about 3 boxes full of cassete tapes that i want to convert into MP3's so that i can fill my external hard drive and ultimately fill my IPOD. What software and tools would i need to do so? Any recommendations from personal experience?

If your goal is MP3, you need a line in on your sound card, a cassette deck to plug into it and MP3 DirectCut. You can Record and cut and tag the songs all from there. If you need to do some noise removal or equalizing record with Audacity, apply the filters and export the file. I'd still use DirectCut to chop the resulting file though.
