Could not perform end of Disc-at-once with HP discs works fine with Verbatim

I used DVD shrink for 2 films, Fracture and Shooter. This worked ok but after DVD shrink is finished Nero burns immediately as usual at 8x.
The discs I was using are HP DVD+R 16x. Tried 2 different discs from the 25 pack spindle both have the same failure.
I changed to Verbatim DVD+RW 4x and the burn process completed as normal.
I have the log of what happened with the HP discs:

Is this a problem with the HP discs or is it my DVD drive that doesn't like 16x discs?
    Many thanks for your help

    Hey blade1984,

What you have experienced is that your burner, MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-841S, doesn't like the HP disks, which code out as Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG, Media Type ID: M01, not considered to be a top or even mid-grade disc. The Verbatims on the other hand are considered grade A media. I'd burn the HP (CMC MAG) disks no faster than 4x.

Most MATSHITA drives are very particular about the type of media and on what speed you try to burn. I have one and it is so inconsistant that I purchased an external burner to use instead. Notebook burners max out at 8x and with the external I can burn upto 20x if I want to push it. Most burners do not burn their best at their top speed and a general rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the media. BUT there is a "sweet spot", some media will burn better faster than half (generally to better media) and others will burn better slower than half (generally poorer media).

Thanks, just tried the HP discs at 4x says unable to burn media. I've wasted 4 of these DVD+R discs now.
I've tried phillips, dysan and imation discs and had no trouble with the matushita disc rejecting them. I thought HP would be a better quality than these. Taking these back to the shop!

For media, just about anything "Made In Japan" is good. Brand-wise, Verbatims, Taiyo Yuden (available by internet only) and Sony are considered good media. Ritek & Ricoh single layer discs are of slightly lesser quality but still useable. Memorex, HP and Imation are outsourced to the lowest(?) bidder and usually code out as CMC Mag.

A very loose rule of thumb I use is if it's made in Japan = good-excellent, Taiwan, Malaysia & Singapore = good, India = fair-good, Hong Kong & China = poor-good.
