No overclocking on that. If you are building a quad core then get this motherboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128050 You can use it for the quad core also. It will work very well. The intel mobo is crap. Forget about overclocking, and since it is open box it probably wont work.
im getting a different motherboard for the quad. this is not for me. its for a friend. im only helping him.
In the same way that a 486DX is great. Yeah sure, it works, but who cares? The Pentium D CPus (especially those ones) are just too slow for serious consideration today. You can get CPUs for naff all money that will rip the pants off any Pentium D, let alone the budget ones. As for the PSU, go with a Thermaltake Purepower if you want cheap. It doesn't have to put out that much power, so you'll be fine. Avoid an Intel motherboard if you want to overclock, they're pretty awful.
thanks sam you've really helped out in the past. ok this is off topic. intel speedstep. what does that do? i have it in my bios but never understood it. also on you showed me a dual core at 2.0 but instead i want to get the core 2 duo at 2.2. is that better?
It's not all about mhz but with the same CPU, the more mhz, the faster it is. If you can afford it, get an E6750. As for speedstep it's a utility that reduces the clock speed of the processor when it's not being used much to cut power consumption and heat.
ok this is what i have so far. http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/A...9115031|1,N82E16813128058|1,N82E16817171018|1
http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/A...3188023|1,N82E16819115031|1,N82E16817153023|1 or this one? like i said before. i dont want to spend that much money on it as we are only goin to use it for a short time.
Go with the Thermaltake PSU, and go with the Gigabyte board over the EVGA. Neither are good boards, but since this is a temporary PC, it's a 'get by' option, and I think the Gigabyte board would be better suited.
I would still get the GA-P35-DS3. They have a 90 dollar version, and honestly I don't understand why you would build such a good "temporary" PC. Make something that lasts.
http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/A...9115031|1,N82E16813128059|1,N82E16817153023|1 ok last question before i buy. is this the setup you all recommend?
I'm not so sure, you've made 3.5Ghz out of your 6400. I can make nearly 3.2Ghz out of my 4300. The 4500 should surely be somewhat higher then...
