    Computer is an AMD Athlon 850mhz and has one fan on top. Not sure what could cause the hang ups. Freezes during installation of windows xp, have formated HDD 5 times and replaced video and audio cards. Still freezes, random times, but never in safe mode. I can use safe mode with networking and all is well, but no sound and video isn't full rez. Anyone? No viruses or files installed and freezes, usually hangs late in windows installation. But like I say never hangs in safe mode. Could it be overheating? How do I check?

    check in bios to see if there is a cpu temp in there. sounds more like a driver problem. pull all cards except video to see if problem still happens. also reseat all ram, both data & power cables to drives & motherboard

    Have tested memory also, sorry, had forgotten to type. Board temp is 131F and CPU Temp is 114F. I will try to reinstall without video card inserted.

    hello.
    look your bug is far from overheating win installation is not a heavy load for 850mhz cpu..

    normally thinks that happens during win installation are:

    1-ram memory incompatibility: try using another ram stick incomp ram causes freezes,unable to copy sys files or video efects like dots bizarre color on screen.

    2-bad or damage cd-rom drive: usually give you the cant copy a file several times during installation.

    3-windows xp cd itself : dirty or scratch cds have damage tracks and cant copy files.

    4-general hardware incompatibility: mostly modems,lan,or some video card specially old mobos.

    *video drivers or integrated video if you formatted your drive or try and agp card an get the same is not video issue..

    look check memory and cdrom

    hope i help
    let me know
