try to see what happens. what anti-virus program are you using if you are as you didn't say so in your startup.

    MAIN REASON

The reason why your central proccesing unit is near a 100% is that
there MAY be PC virus in your Hard disk drive. This came to me once and it was a HDD virus made by some chinese guy. Cheack if there is a virus I reccomend Norton ANti-virus.

Hey ddp, I noticed you said you ran avg7,popup killer and Zone Alarm from start up. I only run Zone Alarm plus scanreg, systemtray, 2 x loadpowerprofile, and a windows update at start up. This takes up about 110mb ram at start up - does this sound about right?

i disable the 1st of the 2 powerprofile & don't have windows update at all as win98se is not supported anymore by ms. did you use dxdiag to get that 110meg used?

Download hijackthis and see what the log file says. It will list everything that is started at startup.

You could also get Startup Control Panel or Startup Monitor to see what you have in Startup.
Spybot is good for that, and I also like using the Registry Cleaner RegSeeker.

I use various programs to monitor ram and cpu usage :-
    TinyResMeter
    Everest
    Process Explorer

I also use these against each other to see how much ram each is using and to compare accuracy against each other. TinyResMeter seems to be quite good and it uses only about 1% of 128mb ram.

I see which programs load at start up using msconfig, CCleaner, and RegCleaner.

    PowerProfile x2
    scanreg
    systray
    Kb891711 (win update)
    and Zone Alarm

(CCleaner doesn't show all of these but it doesn't show any others either)

By unchecking each and then restarting I can see approximatly how much ram each takes at start up. Both PowerProfiles and the win update only take up about 4mb, which is not very much . Even without Zone Alarm, 90mb of ram is still taken up at start up. I am thinking that this is too much. Any suggestions?

try & see what more ram does as you might also see a speed increase
