If you are confortable doing a windows reinstall, then it is a great test (if it still has issues, you know you have a physical problem). The fact that windows updates don't work makes me think you might have a trojan or some other kind of malware. The next step I would try is to do a full system scan with malwarebytes...preferably, do this from a BartToolsPE disk, as this will guarantee that everything is scanned.
thanks for your reply killerbug, i was thinking about doin a full install, i might aswell. i did reboot this pc recently & as windows was installin is was missing files out. it was sayin: cannot find file, would you like to skip? something like that, it done it to several files & i wonder if thats the problem. iv never had a problem before with the disk. all the other times i done the reboot on other pc's i used a dvd drive, on this pc its only a cd & its the first time its missed files during a reboot thanks agen
try another rom drive when re-installing windows & software. also wipe down the disk to remove any finger prints.
right im getting a new copy of windows xp pro, burn it to cd at the slowest speed n im gonna try a fresh install n c if it works il report back
Right done a fresh install, everything went fine, i can install the windows updates now but the cpu still runs quite high. i av taken out the cpu before, could i have put it in round the wrong way? im running windows xp black edition & its great!
can't put cpu in wrong as it won't work. are you talking about cpu temp is high & if so then want is the temp reading? did you replace the cpu heatsink compound when you reseated the cpu?
na the temp is fine i think lol how do i check it? yh it only had a little bit of compund on it when i took it off so just put the same amount back on
so what else could it be ddp? after the reboot tho the pc seems alot better, iv reinstalled all my original programmes & its running alot better than b4. but the cpu is still a problem, will a bigger hard drive make it run better?
is that a socket 462 amd cpu? i just finished doing a fresh install of windows on an amd 2.5ghz socket 462 cpu with 640megs of ram, 32meg agp card, dvd rom drive & 40gig hd. it seems to be pretty fast to me. did you load all your board drivrs including motherboard chipset?
I would start checking all your hardware, something has bad drivers are is failing. Usually I suspect the onboard accessories(lan/video/audio) when there is high cpu usuage for no apparent reason. In my situation I was having high cpu usuage that a windows reinstallation didn't fix, also replacing antispyware/firewall/antivirus didn't fix it. Occasionally when the computer booted up, the audio wouldn't work and required a reboot to work. I installed a pci soundcard and it fix the audio problem and it also got rid of the high cpu usage. Sometimes problems that don't seem related are the actual culprit. Other things to check is make sure your drives are properly connected, example don't have two masters on the same cable or the drives are corrupted. Computer will still bootup and work but it won't work correctly.
