The D950 is fine, it's one of the better old Pentium Ds. About equivalent to today's $70 Pentium E in performance. As for the PSU, it depends which 500W. All PSUs are not equal.

Someone earlier said that you HAVE to use thermal paste. You don't. Currently I have no thermal paste and am running a Q6600's overclocked, with the stock CPU cooler with healthy temperatures. It will definitely help keep temperatures a bit cooler, but most people don't need it.

Yes, you do have to use thermal paste. The stock cooler just comes with a thermal pad, which you have to remove when you put your own on.

Ah for clarity then we're talking about needing to buy extra thermal paste vs. the thermal paste (in pad form) that comes with stock coolers. Didn't want anyone to think that if they threw a stock cooler in their system that it would blow up without adding thermal paste. Come to think of it I don't remember removing any protective tape from the pads before putting my cooler on. Oh well, just more gunk to clean off when I throw the tuniq tower on.

Retail CPUs come with heatsinks, OEM ones don't.
