You definately need a RAM upgrage. Windows itself will use up to 128mb of your existing ram. Your burner will use from 64mb to 512mb depending on burner and model.

    RAM is cheap.

ok, i'm gonna try to buy some RAM afterwards then... =]... but the weirdest thing was that I was already able to burn one DVD with this computer.... What I'm trying to burn are mostly video files, between 1mb and 300mb ... and one last question, that I still didn't understand (I hear I have mental problems, but i'm not 100% sure it's true, hahah): to turn on DMA I must uninstall both IDE controllers, even though they are on "DMA If Available" already?

Ok, well....sorry to jump in here, but I'll help tackle the DMA issue, letting the others focus on your media/burner problems.

I don't know chipset you have, but find out. Go to the website of said chipset manufacturer, (ie VIA, nVidia..Intel) and get the latest chipset drivers.

Download and install...reboot. Then, get to your DMA properties and if DMA is already selected, post back what mode the devices are in. PIO is forbidden! :)

Most CD/DVD drives still live on the old DMA 2,3 mode (UMA66), but some of the newer models are running on DMA 4 (UMA66).

*hint, if you want to get the most bang for your buck memory wise, go for the 2x512 paired sticks...you can get some ones (Kingston, Crucial or Corsair) for around $100.

ok.... I still didn't fix the DMA problem (please read last post), but I did free up some ram by closing some aplications through taskmanager.... Here's my latest log (I even tried burning 2x):

Like I said, I still don't know exactly how to work out the DMA problem (as mentioned on my last post), but at least I'm using decent media =]
    Thx a lot for everything...

ps: just read your message Morph, thx for the help... I'll take a look at what I can do.. =] THX!

    @phildias

I noticed on your log, you had "simulation" mode checked/enabled, you need to disable/uncheck Simulation mode. Here's what you need to do:

((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" its driver “for Win XP users” by alkohol))

Here are some helpful pictures for references.

    A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER," left click on "PROPERTIES"

    B) left click on "HARDWARE," left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"

    C) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
    [IMG]

    D) double left click on either “Primary” or “Secondary IDE Channel”

    E) left click on "DRIVER," left click on "UNINSTALL"
You will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system," just click "OK," now "SHUTDOWN" or "Restart" your computer
    F) once you restarted your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner’s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

**NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "Uninstall" it from the “DVD/CD-ROM Drives”

    ****at Device Manager****
    (A) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
    (B) double left click on your DVD burner or your DVD-ROM drive
    (C) click on "DRIVER," "UNINSTALL," "OK" and then "Shutdown" or "Restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

    Enjoyed it..!!

I uninstalled both primary and secondary, and windows re-installed them and they are already set to DMA. Here is the information:
    Primary IDE Channel Properties:
    -Device 0
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
    Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable
    -Device 1
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
    Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

    Secondary IDE Channel Properties:
    -Device 0
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2
    -Device 1
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
    Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

Is everything right? How come my hard drive isn't set to DMA according to Nero?
Why can't I let nero simulate the recording first? If Nero doesn't Simulate the recording, I can record up to around 40% or so, then I lose my disc, and I have already lost around 5 discs, so I'm REALLY picky about simulating the burn... if i don't simulate, does it really make a big difference?
Thx for all the help guys!

A "simulate/simulation mode" is only a test that Nero is testing the buring process on your burner. It looks like it's writing on the disc, but actually it is not burning anything. I've never enabled/checked on "simulation mode", unless I want to do a burning test. Your best bet is to get a decent/high quality DVD+RW media and try to burn "WITHOUT" the "simulate" mode.

That is a problem. A hard drive 'not applicable'? Never seen that before until now. That's the driver telling Windows there are no DMA settings to use....which is why Nero doesn't detect it.

    Two things:

Go into your BIOS, can't remember where for the life of me cuz so many BIOS' are differnt, but search for advanced features...you will find a section in there somewhere, that will show you if DMA/PIO modes are enabled or disabled. Make sure they are all enabled. (though they probably are since your CD drive is enabled...but in the BIOS, primary and secondary channels are separated)

But, back to the chipset issue...Windows uses whatever chipset drivers it had when setup was complete, and transferred to the hard drive to use incase of a rollback. However, these come quickly out of date as they are almost updated constantly, until a new chipset is released. For instance, the 56.73 drivers from nVidia will say Microsoft as the Driver Provider (SP2) In a sense they are, they are the same as the 56.72 set, but have no additional properties such as the nVidia control panel/right click menus. Just the basics. (which suck)

You really should update your chipset drivers before you attempt any more burning...

If you are using Award Modular BIOS, enter the BIOS then press CTRL F1 to open Advanced User Settings, then click on Intergrated Peripherals. There, you will see the PIO/UDMA settings for the Primary and Secondary channels on IDE 0 and 1.

PIO offers Auto, and Mode selection. UDMA offers Auto, and Disabled. Check to see if UDMA is set to Auto on all channels.

ok, I already uninstalled both ide controllers and reinstalled them and still nothing. so I tried going in to the bios, and can't find my way around. So, here I will write all the options available. Please give me a hint on what to do.. =P
(the items with |> before them are actually menus into which I can go in)
    Here goes:

    *Main:

    System Time - 20:59:39
    System date - 12/15/2005
    Legacy Disk A - 1.44M , 3.5in
    Legacy Disk B - None
    Floppy 3 Supervision - Disabled
    |> Primary Master - Auto
    |> Primary Slave - Auto
    |> Secondary Master - TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552
    |> Secondary Slave - Auto
    |> Keyboard Features
    Language - English
    Supervisor Password - Disabled
    User Password - Disabled
    Halt On - All Errors
    Installed Memory - 256MB

    *Advanced:
    Open Frequency Setting - Standard
    CPU Frequency - 100MHz
    DRAM Frequency - 133MHz
    System Perf. Setting - Optimal
    CPU Vcore Setting - Auto
CPU Lebel 1 Cache - Enabled
CPU Lebel 2 Cache - Enabled
CPU Lebel 2 Cache ECC Check - Disabled
    BIOS Update - Enabled
PS/2 Mouse Function Controller - Auto
    USB Legacy Support - Enabled
    OS/2 Onboard Memory>64M - Disabled
    |> Chip Configuration
    |> I/O Device Configuration
    |> PCI Configuration
    |> Shadow Configuration

When I go into the Main->Secondary Master(TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552) Menu I can select the Ultra DMA Mode and the PIO Mode.... PIO Was automatically set to 4 and Ultra DMA was set to 2.... The thing is I want to turn ON UltraDMA on my Hard-drive... I tried putting Primary Master on "User Defined HDD" and UltraDMA would be set to 4 automatically, but once I save the settings and restart my computer, BIOS says there has been a problem loading hte primary master.... what does it all mean?? AM I GAY?? ahahehahe... please, help a cheap ass newbie in his quest for DVD burning... =]
thx a lot for your help guys!!!

Two performance issues I seen with that setup, but lets work out this one first:

What that means, is that "User Defined HDD" requires you to look at the label on your hard drive, write down the drive's cylinders, heads, and sectors. Put that exact information into the BIOS where the drive is found on the IDE channel. This actually increases boot time, since the BIOS doesn't have to take the time to read this information from the drive. Since you didn't do that, the BIOS doesn't have anything to read from the drive, giving you that error. Basically, the system no longer sees the drive.

I am still concerned about your optical drive showing up in that list, and not your hard drive. But, this topic is getting too far into tech help with your system then it is burning...I hope this is ok with the moderators???

If not, we'll take it to PM.

and those two, should be sychronized. Until you can drop in a 133FSB processor (or 266), you should set your memory speed manually, and drop it down to 100.

thx for all the tips you guys, seriously!
I might even end up actually doing something right! Hahahaha...
Just one last little question: other than the manual of my Hard-Drive and the drive itself, where can I find the number of cylinders, etc? Is there an aplication or something that detects that, so I don't have to open my computer up?
    Thx for everything guys!
I'm almost sure my troubles are almost going away... Hahahahha... I might be on the right way to recording my dang DVD-Rs thanks to you guys... =]
    THX!!!

Possibly the drive's diagnostic disk you can get from the manufacturer's website, but that takes longer to find then a screwdriver!!

(and if you haven't opened it in a while, shame on you....clean all da dust bunnies out already!!!) :)

    @creaky...thanks!

I opened up my computer, unscrewed my hard drive and found no numbers or information on headers and sectors whatsoever... so I went into Western Digital's site and downloaded the Lifeguard Tools and the only information I got out of my drive was this:
    LBA Sectors: 78156225
    CHS: 4865 : 255 : 63

does CHS stand for Cylinders, Headers and Sectors?
    thx everyone!
    cya!

It's Cylinders, Heads and Sectors but you get the jest. That is the info you are looking for.

ok, I'm starting to believe my Hard drive doesn't support DMA... I downloaded the western digital lifeguard programs and found out the data I needed to put in the Cylinders, Heads and Sectors spaces in the BIOS (and DMA 4 was automatically selected), and once I restarted the computer, BIOS said it encountered a problem booting the Primary Master... but I told the computer to continue booting and so windows started up... It was REALLY slow, but I was able to shut down some programs from task manager and everything was back to almost-normal. I ran Nero and tried to record a DVD-R at 2x and the same crap happened: perfect simulation, no burning whatsoever, "Invalid Field in Command".... And once I looked at the error Log I found out that DMA WAS NOT TURNED ON!!! HOLY CRAPNESS!! My hard drive was bought in 2000, if I'm not mistaken... can't I turn on DMA because my drive is kinda old? Well, anyways, here's my log file... have fun!
