Cyberhome DVD/RW nightmare

The Cyberhome numbers I have are: 510-657-0388 (from the "warranty" page), and 888-302-2727 (from calling the first number, and also from HSN). This second number is always busy. I suppose they've taken it "off the hook"...

 

Ah, yeah when we called about our unit it took us awhile to get through on the 1-888 number. When I finally got through they said they are limited in staff. My only suggestion, as much as it bites, is to just keep trying or try emailing them at their website. Good luck!

 

The Aspire unit was very limted editing features. You can't pick the thumbnail image, Naming the title is a joke! All caps, no spaces or symbols. The splash screen for your burned disc features the company logo and the website address! The recorded image was good though, and it ran cooler than the Cyberhome, but it does not have a cooling fan.

The tuners sucks pretty much the same way the Cyberhome's tuner did before I applied the beta-patch to fix the problem of it not grabbing all the available channels both normal broadcast and cable.

Have the same problem as other HSN buyers that purchased in November. The unit is totally locked up after only burning one DVD. Trying to get in touch with Cyberhome is a joke. I called HSN and emailed and got the standard "it's past your 30 days." Just wondering if you had success with HSN after their 30 day money back guarentee? Hopefully, they've realized they sold us JUNK and will want to keep us as customers. If so, I'm interested in talking to your person. THanks!

 

I don't think they are interested in long term relationships. Looks like they want a quick volume sell and who knows after that.

 

Check the Cyberhome group in YahooGroups. Someone just posted an excellent suggestion regarding the lock-up problem (too bad Cyberhome doesn't take this problem more seriously--their "dummy" solution on their website is misleading and a joke. Doesn't help at all.)

I checked it out, but I'm not too confident in my abilities to actually do it! I am very much an electronics novice. Did you actually try this with your unit, and did it work? If so, it may give me the confidence to try it, since the unit is useless now anyway. THanks!

 

Don't expect too much on any repairs from CyberHome!! Their track record shows that they are not understanding in customer relation. Also the bottom line is putting a product out for the consumer to buy knowing full and well that the product is defective. The only recourse would be getting the Federal Trade Commission involved. Make them recall the product for repair or replacement. Which will be one of the avenues I plan on researching.

 

try the latest Bios and Servo updates. The Cyberhome website has a new post as of today. I downloaded and updated my 1500 model. All lockup problems resolved.

 

Anyone have any pointers to information about DVD-RW VR mode?

Walmart has just added a couple of DVD recorders. One is an Emerson that records to DVD-RW, its $224. It supports 10 hours on a DVD. I'm trying one out. The 10 hour mode is MUCH better (IMO) than the 6 hour Cyberhome mode. And the thing runs really cool, you can't tell its on at all (at least heat wise). With better video quality and a pretty equivalent price, I wonder why anyone would buy a Cyberhome.

The DVD-RW stuff is a major pain though. Unlike DVD+RW, the -RW stuff needs to be 'finalized' before it can be read in a DVD player. To make matters much worse, there are two different ways to 'format' a DVD-RW. Video and VR (video recording) modes.

When using the video mode, it create DVDs that can be played in most players but there's practically no editing that can be done.

In VR mode you have great editing. You don't have to worry about where free space is on the disk. It works more like a harddrive and just uses up space where-ever it happens to be. However, the disks created can't be read on any DVD player or DVD-rom drive that I have access to, making the disks pretty much worthless.

Anyone else have experience with DVD-RW recorders?

 

There are lots of complaints about dvd-rw--from what I've read, dvd+rw has won much broader acceptance (more clear-cut than the dvd+r vs. dvd-r issue)

There is a very good website that explains VR in detail--don't have the url handy, but do an Altavista serch and you'll probably find it easily. It is several pages long with lots of clearly explained details about VR (which Cyberhome uses). Apparently, the disks are indeed compatible with other VR dvd recorders. One major point about VR seems to be that it was designed for editing on the disk itself rather than in the computer. (Once I grasped that concept, the whole thing was more intriguing.) Several of the major dvd editing programs are now supporting it.

need help. I have bought Samsung and Nipponic DVD-R disks and the stupid cyberhome 1500 does not read it. i have tried other brands too and it just keep READING and gives the NO DISC reply. Does anyone know what i have to do?

 

The Cyberhome uses DVD+R and DVD+RW. NOT DVD-R nor DVD-RW!! They are different.

 

For the record, I haven't had very good luck with dvd+r on the Cyberhome either. I stick with the dvd+rw and transfer the recordings to dvd+r or dvd-r on the computer for archiving.

I always used DVD+RW and never tried DVD+R and never had any trouble with the media. I was able to get 25 pack of DVD+RW for 1.27 each on the web.

I have had a cyberhome 2500 for 8 months now, without any problems, I only use memorex 4x dvd+r now, I did try other media, and had terrible results. I haven't, so far, had any of the problems everyone is having with the 1500, and some have had with this model.
I bought this unit from HSN.
I have burned over 100 dvds.
I just hope my luck holds out.

My CyberHome 2500 died after 7 months. Only recorded 8 DVD+R's in that timeframe. Hung with message on the console CH 003 ME. Can't power unit off, can't open tray to remove existing disk. Tech advised me to take unit apart and manually remove the disk and then download an update to a CD and load it into 2500. Not sure how to do this if tray won't function. This has been one sorry experience.

 

I was bound to happen.Walked into Walmart today and the cyberhome DVR-1500 is on clearance.Sale priced at $214.Only one available.They are however stocking Sanyo DVD recorders and Emerson as well.The Emerson has a DVD recorder and 4 head vcr in one unit available along with the stand-alone DVD recorder unit. Haven't seen any feedback about the Sanyo yet.

 

I'm trying the Emerson DVD recorder. IMO its 10 hour mode is better than Cyberhomes 6 hour mode, has a cooling fan that keeps it very cool.
Prices are dropping all over. A local circuit city has the Philips open box for $199. Given the choice between the Philips, Emerson and Cyberhome, the Cyberhome would be my last choice. There are better units out there.
