Yep, a few anyway. I've just got home so i'll have a gander at my routers for you.. Primary Router (this is the one hanging off the cable modem and doling out DHCP requests etc) it's only been up 4 days as i updated a couple of settings earlier in the week which required a reboot, but normally it's up for months with probably all of 1000 TX errors during that time. Wireless Packet Info Received (RX) 1225011 OK, no error Transmitted (TX) 1448634 OK, 242 errors Secondary Router (up 14 days) - this is the upstairs router that basically just keeps everything upstairs connected wirelessly to the main downstairs router Wireless Packet Info Received (RX) 3935994 OK, no error Transmitted (TX) 3131695 OK, 66 errors
So it looks like errors are fine. I made my TX rate 100 from 250. I had 50 errors in a day from teh 250 and now I have about 2 a day. I didn't notice a speed difference. I still have my fan inside. What will overclocking it do? 225MHz to 250MHz in terms of performance?
Hey there, just got back in, been on hols for a week. What's up with Halo ?. (many moons ago i played a few pc games online but have never tried using an xbox online (yet))..
I'm playing Halo for PC. Well first nobody could connect to my game. I then looked around and saw somewhere that port 8080 was forwarded. I forwarded port 8080 and it worked fine. What is port 8080 for? Is it dangerous to forward it?
Well certain games/things require certain ports forwarding, torrenting for example needs certain ports forwarded within the router otherwise the router wouldn't know what to do with requests for those ports. Just make sure you have adequate protection, which should be the case anyway. ..try this site - https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 ..it'll show how secure your connection is.
So far its working fine but I am now away on vacation for 3 weeks so I will post back if need be when I get back. Thanks for all your help, I wouldn't have been able to get this working without you. Thank You!
Another brief update on my DD-WRT setup, I've just dug out my old & unused trusty Linksys WRT54G (version 5) that was always 100% stable on stock firmware, and have flashed it with the micro version of DD-WRT (i stuck with v23 SP2 as spent hours reading about all the problems with various v24 versions), and added it as a 3rd 'node' in my WDS setup so i can play media from a spare room that's unreachable by ethernet. It has an old xbox attached to it so basically the Linksys is acting as a gaming adapter, but with far far better firmware. The Buffalo's are still going strong for months at a time. The good thing about WDS is that this 3rd one will only be switched on when needed (not often) without disrupting any other connections in the house. edit- there's another DD-WRT thread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/608960
So what were the steps exactly that you used to get the Xbox to go online with the Linksys router? In other words using it as a gaming router?
Nothing from the xbox side, the xbox is set to DHCP and the main Buffalo router has a 'Static DHCP' entry for the xbox ie so that the xbox always gets the same ip address.. i've never once tried connecting to xbox live though.. no idea how that all works yet
Do you think you can take me through the steps on the Linksys side? Will a Linksys DD-WRT and DWL-2310 work together as your setup?
Sure. I've got brain fade at the moment, remind which routers you have and which firmware's on each, please
The Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT Micro v24 D-Link DWL-2310 with the latest D-Link Firmware I believe the D-Link isn't hackable.
No the D-Link doesn't look like it's supported. As i say i've never tried to use xboxes on live, but all mine have XBMC etc installed and all see the internet. All my xboxes are ethernet connected to one of my Buffalo's, well via ethernet switches anyway. If i recall correctly you were having trouble forwarding ports for xbox live ??, can't remember where you got to and if you were trying to port forward under dd-wrt or stock Linksys firmware...
I fixed the problem with port forwarding but I think the other problem I was having was that when I was wiring up my xbox to my router and trying to access the internet or anything in XBMC it would fail. How do I test the connectivity in XBMC? First step is to make sure the thing works online, then I'll work on getting it online to XBL or Xai Connect or whatever it is that XBMC supports
Set the xbox to DHCP in the MS Dashboard, and setup a Static DHCP for an IP address of your choice in dd-wrt with the MAC address of the xbox. Obviously this ip address should be within the DHCP scope you set in the main dd-wrt screen. http://www.wachs.org/?q=node/21 Do this in the Administration/Services screen, near the top under the DHCP Server section. This way the xbox will always get the same IP address from the Linksys. Then just go into XBMC and see if the RSS feed scrolls across the screen ie see if the xbox is on the internet..
So heres my problem now. This could be on the Xbox side or Router side. I hooked my Xbox to my WRT54G that runs DD-WRT v24. That router hooks straight to the internet. Now the problem with my softmodded xbox with XBMC is that it doesn't see the cable. I can't even get online with it. Do I have to "reflash" the latest version of XBMC and if I do can you send it to me from your Xbox since we know that works and let me know how to properly install it. Thanks.
