I have two DVD burners I got from ebay for cheap. One is a OEM NEC ND-1100A. I upgraded the firmware and it will burn any DVD+R I throw at it and at 4x speed. Works Great no complaints. The second one I got was also a NEC ND-1100A most all numbers are Identical except for a few and this burner was out of a Dell machine. I tried the NEC website firmware on it but wouldn't detect it. So I went and found it at Dell website, downloaded, updated to the latest, and it still won't burn sh*t! Ok well it burns but out of all the media I have only burns at 2.4x and won't burn on the same disc's as the other ND-1100A i have. So what's up with that? Why does Dell ruin such a wonderful old dvd burner? Heck I had a OLD ND-1000A that would burn on just about any DVD+ media too. Is there any way to use the NEC website's firmware update on this burner? I know it works good.
i got some copy/paste i can snag from a thread i replied to yesterday; snippet from here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/325884#1907845 edit- don't forget that the firmware is probably not equipped too well for new media
Heck I'd be happy if I could even get NEC's ND-1100A firmware on it instead of dell's crappy one! At least I know it will burn on all the dvd's I use.
What's the firmware version on both those NEC 1100A's? I've got my dads old compaq sitting here.I got him that same drive from ebay a year and a half ago. Great drive, but he doesn't use it much. It is also a great reader. I have that Nec doing the ripping, and my Benq 1620 doing the burning-booktyping purposes. That Dell burner sounds like is is a re-badged NEC 1100A,therefore totally different firmware version. I'm curious to see what those fw versions are. There may be a possibility of crossflashing the dell to the regular NEC 1100A fw. Cdfreaks.com would be the place to search for this. That site specializes in hacked/cross flashed firmware, and usually give very good detailed instructions.
Well the true NEC firmware is on this page: http://support.necsam.com/Optical/downloads/FlashFirmware/ And using ND-1100A FW 1.93 < after this firmware upgrade 4x burn speed on any media I put in it be it 8x or higher. Works like a champ! As for the Dell version it is on this page: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_cdrom&message.id=59888 and I downloaded and used the R59801.EXE / version 10GE. Just to note dell's firmware sux ! Still don't recognize same blank dvd's as the other nd-1100A and still only burns at 2.4x on generic media.
