Hmmm...I hadn't looked at this thread until now. Such a sad commentary indeed. It is truly sad that some don't know the difference between patriotism and nationalism; liberal or conservative, the former is a good thing which, even in the midst of ideological differences has always had a productive consequence while the "my country right or wrong" mentality of the latter brings only ruin...thank God we've not seen much of it since Germany's little experiment in national socialism.

An interesting bit of irony comes to mind. Immediately after invading Iraq, there were quite a few demonstrations in a lot of American cities. The Heritage Foundation, the elite of conservative Republican think tanks, came out swinging preaching on any network that would listen that these unpatriotic "liberals" are treasonous and should be jailed. Interesting. Precisely what Saddam Hussein would have said...both extremists to whom opinions mean nothing if it isn't their's. When all is said and done, they're exactly alike.

oh, and gerry1: what do you mean by the difference between patriotism and nationalism? as i can find, they are defined nearly identically, except that patriotism has a connotation of loving your country...hmmm, well, from inside its borders, doing what you can to make the most of it, while with nationalism one actively asserts dominance, authority, or superiority over other country's, as though one has an inferiority complex or something...am i on the right track, gerry?

i'm pretty sure you've already listed them, and i'm pretty sure Fox is mostly full of BS, as they've had their false facts handed to them like John the Baptist's head on a silver platter a number of times.

The only time I watch Fox is when I'm looking for a police chase live on TV...I mean if a channel is so strong, then why would they employ the likes of Greta Van Sustren and *giggle* Geraldo Rivera? Greta's sole purpose in life is Natalie Holloway, move on Greta until you really have an update on the case. And Geraldo, what a Jack@ss...need I say more.

Edit: you want some names, I'll give you some names.

John McCain, sorry he didn't make it a couple years ago, and we all know he doesn't want it now.

Joe Biden, go get em Joe.

i had to get in on this . anyway your only a number in the army or whatever branch . they will spend years over in saudia and millions of dollars and also lives .and we will leave there and some other ass@@@# will take over and it will be the same way it was before we went there.just like in veitnam all those years helping out the south . 58, 000 lives gone for nothing.the day we left the north took over anyway .does not make sense in my book. remember war keeps the economy going ......i dont think we should blame bush tho. this is why i am adding the picture to my threads lots of people forget the veitnam war i dont uncle was there and lost lots of his friends.

dont count John McCain out he may run ,he sure would be alot better than any of the liberals out there, hilary clinton ,howard dean or al gore. joe biden is way to far left to get elected he fits in the same boat as ted kenndy both so out of touch with the people it aint funny the democrats are a laughing joke. thats why there losing seat EVERYWHERE (the south being an example) thay have no message all they can do is attack. the democrats used to be a good party /John Kenndy days but thats over the liberals like howard dean run the show which is to bad

@auslander: you are essentially correct and the two can seem much the same; patriotism is love love of one's country, its people, its system of laws, justice and government...nationalism can be all those things but takes it further in the love of government and its authority...even if the dictates of that government go against even the principles it claims to support..."My country right or wrong". I'm no conservative by any means yet I quite agree with the following article's definitions of patriotism and nationalism ... its actually quite brief. I don't agree with everything in it but the difference between the two is explained better than I can. The views of the heritage foundation had more in common with the "Enemies of freedom" they point the finger at than with the very principles upon which this country was founded. They are nationalists, not at all patriots.

Any American, whether the most liberal of democrats or the most conservative of republicans, any american who won't acknowledge one's right to an opinion or who abuses others with different opinions may be a nationalist but he's not patriot because he's abusing the very principles upon which this country and its constitution is built.

@toyotaman: I wouldn't vote for McCain simply because we don't share the same political views but I do have an enormous respect for the man. If all american politicians, regardless of their politics, had that kind of dignity, it sure would do us a world of good.

as always your dead wrong. here this is funny

    Highly Classified Material
The following photo is a video capture from a security camera located in the North Corridor that leads to the Senate floor in the US Capitol Building.
This is classified material, so please do not ask how or where I got it.
Also, please DO NOT forward this to all of your friends. The repercussions could shake things up more than you can imagine.
A highly respected politician's head is on the line here...but I feel someone should know the truth.

I would hate to be the guy that got shot.
Not for the pain or hospitialization.....NO

For the simple fact of knowing that I will most likely be remembered as:

The guy who got shot by dick.

    Discuss.....
