I have a stand alone dvd player which will play both the divx and xvid formats, basically up until now i have been encoding my divx files using dvdsanta and burning them to dvd-r with some excellent results....but my problem is this.....a friend of mine told me that i should be able to just burn the divx files to cd-r without any encoding and the player should just play the files....is this true?

Depends on the type of player you have. Check videohelp.com and search your player. Check the user ratings to see what your player does or doesn't play. If your too lazy to do this, then just burn a divx movie to cd and give it a try.
