Do you have to have a mini-DVD Burner to backup gamecube games? Could you just use a regular DVD Burner?

No, you can't use regular DVD burner. You need to purchase a mini-DVD burner, Pioneer mini-DVD burner is good. Besides your Viper modded GC, you also need to buy PSO & BBA to play backup. To play backup, do the following:

    1) Hook up your GC's BBA to your PC Ethernet Card with a LAN cable. You can also connect via switch of router.
    2) Place the backup mini-DVDR into your mini-DVD burner. If you haven't made a backup disc yet, you can use any DVD copying software to copy your original GC mini-DVD to a mini-DVDR with your mini-DVD burner.
    3) Put PSO disc into your GC & start it up.
    4) Your Viper modded GC will automatically launch the backup mini-DVDR game.
    5) Have fun!

There is no such thing as "mini-DVD Burner" [I think]. I'm not sure if your Gamecube is modded to play regular sized DVD-R, but there cases that let your GCN play regular sized DVD-R.

I'm not sure the compatibility of DVD Burners with Mini-Disc, but I'm pretty sure most will burn mini-DVDs. It is better to backup regular sized DVDs instead of mini-DVD because mini-DVDs are more expensive than regular sized DVDs. But answering your question aboutt mini-DVD burner, I think most DVD burners out there will take mini-DVD discs [don't take my word for it though].

[Edit] Like I said, don't take my word for it; but if you can't trust me then do research on this.

If I buy the viper premod with the viper DVD-R case, then I don't need the mini burner?

Doesn't buying a viper case, allow you to use DVD-R instead of the mini DVD-r, so you wouldn't need a mini burner then?

How are you suppose to put a mini DVDR in a Regular DVD burner drive?

If the dvd burner drive is at all good quality (mines a TDK) there will be a smaller recessed slot for mini-dvd media, such as found in almost any ejectable tray. And yes, mini dvd's will just report being 1.4 gigabytes, and if the burner isn't that good and can't tell, the software will think its just full dvd.

Either way...IT WILL WORK. 35 Games cannot lie to me.

I don't even know why the hell I'm bothering to answer you. But yes, there is no such thing as a mini-DVD burner. Just use Nero on a regular DVD burner, and it will burn the disc just like a DVD (unless the file is too large). Since discs are burned and read from inside to outside, burning and finalizing a mini-DVD is just like burning and finalizing the first 1.4 GBs of a regular DVD, so any DVD burner can do it.

i don't know why you bothered to reply either as the question was already answered.

there's a lot of information about the GC and backups on Aferdawn, tom54. a search would help you a lot.

Thank you clickbile. One correction though, you said unless the iso is larger. That might be a problem with regular burning, but remember gamecube games never go above 1.4 gigs.

Thus, take that complication out of the whole mess.

I see it now!, there is a smaller circular splot thing in the middle of the tray. That's where the mini disc go!

So I can't just put a original into my dvd drive and extract the stuff out? Is that why you have to use the PSO method to extract the data out, because your normal burner woundn't do it? Is the advantage of a mod chip the fact that you don't have to stream the image from your computer to the gamecube? You can just go from disc to playing the game just like a mod xbox?

Tom you are CORRECT this time. The advantage of a chip is you can simply burn the image to a disc and pop in your gamecube, as apposed to streaming it. You still need to stream to rip though, but you DON'T need PSO for that. Since you have a modchip, you can download and burn other ripping tools, such as GCOS-Ripper

For those of you not wanting to go the MINI DVD route, grab a VIPER GC Case mod which will allow you to fit FULL SIZED DVD's in your Gamecube!!

With little modification to the GC's laser it can read the FULL DVD's

Here is a photo of the full sized DVD TRAY:

You can pick one of these up for ~ $33 they also should have crystal clear available soon.
