Well my dog is called Ziggy - she is now 14 and I got her when she was 7 months old from Battersea Dogs Home in London. She was abused by her previous owner, having no fur, wet herself when you went near her and was generally a mess.

My view about dogs is there are enough in the world and I try not to encourage anyone to breed more as that leads to unwanted pets. I know breaders are needed, but not puppy farms.

Ziggy is a Cross Doberman and Sharpei and what a wonderfully loyal caring dog. She has many of the attributes of a Labrador and goes to the pub with me every night. Licks everyone who will let her and looks for food and brings a little pleasure to people she meets.

Well there you go I have a soft heart.

    Here is her picture.

The funny thing is about this story is I didn't want a dog, it was my girlfriend at the time, after much pestering I gave in and we got a dog. Though it was me that had to get up at 7 am to walk it in the mud and rain etc.

A year later she moved out and I said what about the dog? She said I can't take her you keep her! Well now she is my best mate.

thats one of the main reasons i want another dog. They dont care if you're broke, or if you had a bad day and are a bit crabby, a dog is your best friend no matter what. andi refuse to buy a dog from a pet store, or a backyard breeder, or some idiot that breeds their dogs to show the kids the "miracle of life". those are the types of things that leads to unwanted pets and strays. The only thing keeping me from adoptinig a dog from a rescue shelter is the fact that i want an Akita. No matter how cool the dog is, you never know how they will act around children, and since i have 4 kids i cant run the risk a giant akita hurting one of the kids. I'd just feel better with a puppy so i would know for sure how it was raised and know its habits right from the beginning. at least then if something bad does happen i can only blame myself for not being a proper dog owner. i just dont feel it's right ot blame a dog for showing their natural behaviour. It's a shame that the pit bull has a bad reputation, i've had 3 of them and they were the best dogs i ever owned besides my rottie. when my nephews and nieces were little they used to ride my pitt bulls, pull on the ears, steal the food bowls, etc, and the worst thing that ever happened was when one of the females got a little playful and barked 1 time at my nephew and it scared him so bad he pissed his pants! he was 3 at the time, but it sure was funny. when he started crying molly (the pitt) crouched down and crawled over too him wimpering like a baby saying she was sorry. saying all pitt bulls are bad is like saying all black people are thieves!! just a bunch of stereotypical bullshit in my opinion, a dog of any breed can be mean and aggressive if raised that way.

As I said, my dog was 7 months old when I got her. Have you search for a specialist Akita rescue centre - certainly with other breeds there are rescues of a certain type of dog. Although you say you don't want an adult dog, you can be pretty sure of their characters when they have grown up. Also people move and can't take their animal with them etc.

yeah i know there are good adult dogs, but i dont want to spend the whole time keeping a watchful eye on the dog because i didn't know it when it was a pup. I just cant bring myself to do it, as much as i would like to rescue an adult from a shelter. and yes there are Akita rescue centers in my area, and there was even a dog there that i considered adopting, but i just cant risk it, call me weird but i'd just feel better about getting a puppy. My wife and I have recently discussed buying 5-6 acres of land to build a house on and also build a large kennel and fenced off area to start a large breed rescue facility since it seems the larger breeds are the ones that get abandoned most often. But it will probably just end up on the ever growing list of things i would like to do. In a few years i'm going to end up with about 50 acres and 6-7 horses to deal with, i dont see where a few dogs added in would make that much difference. "Come on down to uncle Darth's animal farm!"

    @ haymarket

Ziggy is a beautiful dog for sure, nice coat of fur!

    @ darthnip

Go with what your belly tells ya, the Akita is a nice dog.

I have two doggys, a New Zealand Border Collie, and a Mexican Chi-wa-wa (hope I spelled that right!)

Both are very good animals, it's all up to the trainer as to how they turn out.

I would have three dogs, but wife won't let me. Had to pass a chance on a beautiful black lab. One day I'll own one, I hope!

I know i said i wanted a puppy, and i know i said i wanted a purebred Akita, but today I took the kids to a carnival where they had animals up for adoption and we fell in love with an Akita/ black lab mix named Cooper. Keep your fingers crossed, the adoption process needs to be reviewed by the shelter before they will let anyone adopt their dogs (which is a good practice in my opinion).
here is a pic of cooper

Cooper looks like a definite keeper there Darth :)

I've always loved short haired terriers of all sorts especially Jack Russell Terriers. Russells are smart as a whip, extremely athletic and have a seemingly infinite amount of energy. Great companion dogs they are - not too big, not too small.

we have a jack russell that has natural tail & ears, not the cut done version. she is very territorial about her property but is in love with a german shepard/wolve mix eventho both are fixed!

well i gotta admit i fell for the dog before the kids saw him, but they were soon to follow once they saw him (of course being 5 year olds they fall for anything with 4 legs and a tail).

Cooper looks exactly like my Jack Russell (Bruno) only bigger.

He loves to fight with me. I lost todays fight and I've got blood running down my arm from a 3 inch scratch and more blood trickling down my lip cos he bit me.

Thought I had him beat cos I had hold of all his paws. Forgot about his teeth.

Had a row off the wife cos HE bit Me..!!!

Quote from wife "You must have upset him for him to bite you like that. Don't be so rough with him."

    Grrrr.....
