My friend is trying to bring his Windows Vista down to Windows XP. When he inserts the disc, a little box appears that says "Run setup.exe", or "Open folder to view files". He clicks "Run Setup.exe", the Windows XP installation menu opens up. He clicks on "Install", and then it freezes for a bit, then nothing happens. Any idea as to why this is happening?

(If it's any consolation, it IS a burnt copy.)

    Thanks in advance.

You may need to delete the old partitions.

    What exactly does that mean?

Is he putting the disc in when Vista is running? If so tell him to install XP to put the disc in, turn off the PC, and then turn it on. After doing that, assuming the BIOS is configured correctly, he should have no problems installing XP.

What does happen when you start the computer? There may be a option to boot from CD. If it says like "Hit F8 to Boot From CD" then hit F8. But anyway post back with what it says if anything.

The "burnt" copy of XP .. MUST .. be a bootable copy in order for the CD to boot the system.

Since there's no downgrade to XP from Vista, just wipe the partition, create a new one and install.

As above, use your bootmenu to point to the CD-Drive with the XP CD in it. Delete the partion, re-format it, and install XP.

Never even noticed the part of it being burnt :p, but yeah that would be the problem.
