I have an older camcorder with 1394ieee port. My pc only has usb 2.0 and no expansion bays. Is there an adapter available that would convert the firewire to usb?

You need to get a PCI Firewire card.

I appreciate your response and I had a firewire card installed on a previous computer but, as I stated in my initial query, my current computer does not have an expansion bay.

You're pretty much screwed then, unless you get a new computer, or find a friend that has a computer with a firewire port, who will let you use it to capture your videos.

Yes, there are Firewire to USB simple adaters,i.e. http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10314
The problem is just how effective is this adapter because from what I have read you will drop video content. USB/Firewire are too different in design.

Now at Directron.com they actually have a 3.5" tray adapter that is a whole lot more practical -- unless you don't have an open 3.5" slot. With the correct cable you could connect straight to your motherboard's onboard IEEE.

jami1995, what is the make & model# of your computer or motherboard to see what you have? expansion bays(3.5" & 5.25" bays) & expansions slots(pci, agp & pcie slots) are 2 totally different things.

emachine el1200. according to specs on box and web site there should be 2 expansion bays but there aren't and no pci slot to plug my firewire card into either.

yes, this is my computer but if you notice on the spec page that you referenced
, the media card reader section where the firewire port is listed, is footnoted and the footnote indicates that these ports are optional. obviosly they opted not to put one on my machine and while the pci express slot is not listed as optional, i have yet to find it. there is an expansion slot on the case/tower but no corresponding slot on the motherboard that i can see. i'll check again to make sure and thanks again for your time.
