    Hi again,
    Filters - Default DirectSound Device
    Video Renderer
Audio Switcher --- Harry Potter etc.mkv/English,Audio English (audio 1)
    Vorbis Decoder
The sound is not very high and when I tried an avi after to see what codec came up (was divx) nearly blew my head off as I forgot to turn speakers down, so maybe there is some not right with this mkv file all round.
I notice when I open the file in mpc there is an option namely Dub: to type something in, but I havent as dont know what dub is.

Hi, I have all but given it up now, having downloaded another wmv9 codec from microsoft. My pc is going to be so full of rubbish, River Past, etc. etc.
However, it is frustrating because after the message comes up in Virtualdub that it requires VFW compatible codec, although nothing will come up on the screen, I can scan and see the size of it, number of frames etc. also part of File Information, giving length, size etc. : Four cc code - four cc yyy unknown,
    Decompresor - Uncompressed RGBO
Audio Tag - Tag: 0xFFFE. Not decodable. Extensible.
    Compression - unknown (tag FFFE).
I keep thinking it is something wrong with file, but I am not so sure now as I dont think someone would go to all this trouble of converting and then putting it on a site without checking it over first. Anyway, thanks for all your help and patience.

ok VFW stands for video for windows, you have the necessary codec right.

you have ffdshow ? get it from the software section, its not a codec pack, its a filter, it ses a decoder that will decode all mpeg4s variant, libavcodec. low risk, as i know.

I downloaded ffdshow still get "couldnt locate decompressor for format yyy(unknown) Virtualdub requires VFW compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by WMPlayer are NOT suitable. Only "Direct Stream copy" is available or this video". Going by that it would appear I havent got the necessary stuff installed, which I thought I had. I noticed in the ffdshow folder, one exe file "make avi's" which I clicked just to see what it did but said "failed to initialize aviSynth" I did check that box at the installation prompt, also I noticed at the very top of the installation where all the boxes are to check, The DirectShow Filter (required) box would not check (wouldnt accept tick). I cant see it is worth pursuing this any further and am sorry all your help has been in vain. I wondered about looking on suprnova again as the file is still up for grabs and I believe it had an http site name with it, so I dont know if it is possible to make any contact.

Hello, sorry I am back again. I have more or less given up on the mkv but I am a little worried because I noticed that ffdshow is on the start menu but it has Registry Files, audio filter config, config, raw only filter config, vfw config. Am I supposed to do anything with these options - I thought fddshow just got installed in computer and sat there without me having to do anything with it. I dont want to upset my pc, as it is now Divx Player is not recognising some of the avi's that it did before, unless I browse to all files.
Another thing, if you dont mind being patient, now I have virtualdub, can I use this for cd images. A while ago I had a large file in two cd they were rar, so opened them and converted to bin and cue and burned in Nero as cd image. They will only play in pc or my KISS DVD/DIVX standalone player, which is not much use as my friends dont have this player. Today, I find I have yet another 1500 MB of rar files (the person who put the movie on didnt mention rar files otherwise I would not have bothered to download) So can I use virtualdub to convert to something playable on a dvd player? I did quickly open one of the old cd images, in virtdub, and had two screens come up, havent a clue what to do or how to use. Would appreciate your help on that as you seem to know about converting and virtdub actually recognised the thing after parsing!!! unlike that miserable Matrovska thing.

    i wish i had a divx/xvid player :|

i use ffdshow and don't have divx installed, only xvid for encoding. but its what you prefer. you can uninstall ffdshow if you want to.

about the pictures and virtaldub, you can make those pictures into avi type of videos like you can do it with vcd. virtual dub can only encode mpeg4 or any other codec except install, mpeg2 is licensed, so you need to buy, mpeg 1 and 2 i use tmpgenc.
but i think if the player reads image cd. burn it as images.

did you get virtualdubmod to work ?

you opened the image files that meansits not virtualdub thats b0rk. it must be your codec. try with other videos.

i see why you want avi now.

maybe the mtroska thing didn't work cause it wants you to buy the dvd :p

makeavis is not for you unless you want to use avisynth. i'm sure you don't want any new things right now :p

The KISS dvd/dvix DP1000 is not available in U.S. at the moment but the DP450 (which is supposed to be the same but slightly larger is available from MTS Business Solutions, Wilmington DE - best wait for Amazon, com to get it I reckon).

I had a near disaster last night, as a cd image file opened in virtualdub (but I dont know how to use it) I decided to try and open it in Video Cleaner - big mistake, computer froze up, lots of other things, had to shut down incorrectly, hence when I re-booted, lost my profile so thought I had lost everything, no way of getting everything back except by restoring system back to 8th July. So I lost everything, except that vile Video Cleaner, for some reason, so got shot of that immediately. Got back virtualdub and the mpc player etc. In the meantime, I tried playing the converted bin and cue cd image in my Sony standalone and it played fine, so then tried the original Farenheit cd and whereas before it said "cannot play" it played fine, so due to someone telling me that bin and cue are most played on computer, and the Sony had a temporary blip, I have made a real idiot of myself because I hadnt realised I was producing vcd. So there is no need for me to try and convert bin and cue to a dvd, which apparently is not possible anyway.
I lost FFDshow but I think the main problem was that mkv file must have had something wrong with it.

Yes "P" maybe Matroska file is telling me to buy dvd, but its not available in U.K. and was only trying to convert for a friend's child.

Thanks for all your help, I have learned some stuff even though I didnt convert mkv and will respect my pc a little more now after yesterday's scare! I dont think it liked fddshow or wmv, as it was acting strange in the morning and even started defragging without me opening the program - only found this out because of burring sound and opening up task manager and then I couldnt stop it.

    Hi,
Anyone who wants to know about mkv files, there is a site http://www.matroska.org

Regarding wmv files, I am a bit naive obviously, I didnt realise they were used basically for porn which I am definitely not interested in, so do not wish to receive any more private messages from members on their wmv problems, thanks.

To djmmorbid: I guess you got the H Potter mkv from the same source as me - complete waste of time. Try downloading the little Media Classic player (mpc) which Shiroh gave the link of in a post in the previous page. That works fine to play it in computer, but if you ever get to convert it, it will be a miracle and I would love to know how you did it. I personally think there is something wrong with that particular download, as all the other downloads I have are accepted by virtualdub, but not this one.

djmorbid - I think this was the link that I got the Media Player Classic download from. I did download an ogg vorbis codec, cant remember from where, but when I had to restore the system (because of River Past Video Cleaner!!!) I lost ogvorb but the player still played Harry P so maybe I didnt need it in the first place. If it is the same file that I downloaded, around 608MB the sound is quite feint anyway, and the speakers need to be turned up on full. Try and get another download in avi.

ah, about the audio, try checking if its the player's fault, but propably not. my ogg direct show filter is v.0.9.9.5, have lost track of what's new :p

check with other ogg source, it may be the source.

download the xp version if youre using xp.

djmorbid - I think Suprnova is great - at least you get what you see - no filthy porn under a different name. They always start downloading immediately (try using shareaza.com as the client), best to get a new one so there are more sources. The reason they are big (more than the average 690MB avi etc.) is because they are in rar files which convert to vcd. I got Dodge Ball 1500 MB in around 30 hours, but then I had five other movies downloading but a 680 MB overnight. The only disadvantage I can see is if you are OTT like me and have too many downloading at once, then the uploaders take all the cpu out of your computer so you cant get onto the internet unless you close the program down. I mistakenly got the mkv file but I doubt you will get it to convert as I have tried EVERYTHING and I dont give up easily, you can see that by the number of posts to and fro with poor Shiroh.
