Please excuse my ignorance - If I buy a Dual layer burner will I be able to back up a DVD that is over 4.7 just by running Decryptor and making the backup from the resultant vobs etc with no compression prog such as shrink or nero etc?

    yes

But here the catch $10(US) a piece for blank dual layer discs(last time I heard). But if you want to fork out that much dough then rip ISO mode and burn ISO in decrypter and your done.
But if you need a new drive then go ahead and get a dual layer burner. You can always burn single layer discs until the price of dual layer disc comes down. If you google a little then I think you'll find that dual layer burners are only a little more expensive than the single layer drives.
