dual layer drive stopped recognizing dual layer dvd

    I have a hp dv8000 my dvd drive is hl dt st dvdram gsa 4084n , it is suppose to be a dual layer drive but off late has stopped recognizing dual layer drives...the problem is not just in windows but also in linux....it performs all other functions such as burning/reading normal cds and dvds....could someone pleassse help me!!!

    How about . . . .
    Your DVD drive just died.

    All of your stated symptoms point to this. it sound like the laser can't focus to the second layer.
