Hello, all! First time poster here, and new to the DVD-burning game, so forgive any "duh!" moments on my part.

Right now I'm trying to burn a couple of episodes of Heroes to a DVD for a friend who missed them, and I've got all of the files converted to their proper "burnable" forms with WinAVI. I'm using Nero Burning Rom 6.6.0.18, and am going through the process as described in your helpful guides here at AfterDawn.

But, of course, there's a problem. The burner gets through most of the disc, and then spits out a "Burn Process Failed" error at the last minute, right before it finishes. I've tried varying burn speeds, as I saw it suggested that might help, but no luck there. So I thought I might post the log of the failed activities and see if any of you more learned folk might have some suggestions as to how to remedy this problem. Any and all suggestions would be helpful, because this is annoying the hell out of me! Thank you in advance! Without further ado, here's my log ...

    Hi gvamp
    Welcome to aD

    Here's a couple of suggestions.

    Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532A>Version: TI51
Laptop drive? May need a firmware update. Check the laptop manufacturers site to see if there is a update available. May help with the discs you're using if one is available.

    Physical memory : 478MB
    Free physical memory: 67MB
    Memory in use : 85 %

Lot of memory in use. Free some memory up. So no multitasking and close any unneeded programs.

    Disc Manufacturer: RITEKF - 1
Decent discs but if no firmware up date is available or they still fail try some different media.
Look for Verbatim, made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell, or the best Taiyo Yuden which you can buy online from a reputable site.
I'd shot for 8x media on this drive if no firmware update too.

    File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
Roxio and Nero don't always play well together. So you can uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool.

Binkie, thanks for the prompt response and suggestions ... you rock! I looked for a firmware update for my drive, but none was available, so I ran the Roxio zap tool and closed some extra programs to free up memory while the burn was running. All of the local stores were closed, so I used the same Maxell discs I've been using, and gave it a try again tonight at 2X speed.

The DVD burn process completed ... but nothing will recognize the disc, oy! My DVD player gives me a disc error message, and my computer's drives won't acknowledge it at all. I know SOMETHING'S been burned onto the disc, because I can tell from looking at the back of it ... nothing can get to it, though. Could I possibly just have a bad package of Maxell discs and all of this is stemming from that? Or is there something deeper and more insidious going on, possibly in the disc closing process? I'm planning on picking up some Verbatim discs tomorrow, as per your suggestion, so this might soon be a moot point, but any insight would be appreciated.

Here's a log of the process that successfully created the unreadable disc, if that's any help. Thank you again!

    Not a problem gvamp

You have some success just not all the way there yet :)

The disc burning looks ok - you have the right settings in Nero:
    Finalize CD : TRUE
    Multisession : FALSE
    Burning mode : DAO

Could be a bad batch of Maxell's but I'm leaning more towards the drive not being compatible with them.

One thing firmware does is help with the correct write strategy of media. If the drive doesn't have it for the media you are using it will use a generic write pattern. This doesn't also work as you can tell.
Laptop drives can be picky esp. ones that haven't had any firmware support. Doesn't mean all are bad just some don't get the support they need to burn all discs esp. 16x media.

For my laptop drive I only use Taiyo Yuden 8x anymore. If you're in the US you can check out supermediastore.

Hopefully those Verbs you pick up will do better.

    Physical memory : 478MB
    Free physical memory: 77MB
    Memory in use : 83 %

Even after closing some programs still a lot of memory in use.

So do a disc defrag, run a registry cleaner like ccleaner (use the issues & cleaner options) and run a virus & spyware scan.

Might be a long shot but if still falling disable or uninstall the the virtual drive you have.

    Keep us posted!

Binkie, you're my hero! I cleaned out a bunch of crap from the registry with CCleaner, defragmented, and then tried the Verbatims, and voila, it worked like a charm! Whoo hoo! Now we can finally get those missing episodes of Heroes watched and start going through all the ones he has saved on his DVR!

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out, and you've saved me a ton of time and frustration with your assistance ... I really appreciate it. You're a digital saint, Binkie!

    You're very welcome gvamp

Good to hear you're happily burning now :)

The maintenance bit - defrag, registry clean etc - do on a regular basis - helps keep the pc run smooth.

    Happy Burning!
