dvd burner hangs at the same spot then continues or fails

i have formatted my system so many times but nothing sorts it.
i have bought a new burner (pioneer 109) and updated the firmware and i have updated the bios on the mboard and updated the ide drivers to the latest ones. always the same thing. it gets to a certain spot usually about 8% then it stops, thinks about it for a bit, and will then either continue, or fail and lock up.
