    yum15 ,
Then the CD burner should be the on the Secondary IDE Channel as the slave. Are the HD's on the Primary IDE Channel and set up as Master and slave if you have 2 HD's?

Well if thats the one you are burning from, and that is the one stuck in PIO, then I would assume that is your problem.

I tell you what, just try swapping your dvd burner around with your Primary Slave.

    eg.Primary Slave - Dvd burner
    Secondary Master - HD

Make sure you swap the jumpers around aswell.

    See how that goes.
First uninstall the drives in windows, then uninstall the IDE controller for both Primary and secondary.
Then turn off PC, remove completely the HD and Dvd burner.
Power back on and let windows install the IDE controllers again.
The shut down, connect up the 2 devices as outlined and power backup.

Report back the results of the DMA tables in IDE controllers properties........

I too noticed a slowdown of my burner. Doing backups, archiving DVD's, etc. I don't think the model matters but I have both a DVD player and DVD burner. The burner is a 6x. I noticed one day when using DVD Shrink, it was recording in 1x. I tried to delete the drive from the system, it reinstalled, still 1x burn. I looked around on the net for a quick fix and deleted the controller from my system so it would re-install (I'm running XP home w/SP2). Nothing changed. I tried to uninstall and reinstall my burning software, i.e, Nero ulta 6, record now, dvd shrink. Still nothing. My drives say DMA for all the drives (both before and after I deleted them). Thinking my drive might be dUsing Nero's drive speed tool, it tells me WNASPI32.DLL and ASPI32.sys are missing? Before I put them back in they system directory, would this cause a problem? I just installed a 16x dual layer drive by Optorite. Running the Nero speed tests, it's staying around 4x when my other drive was staying around 2x. WTH?

Rarely does XP require ASPI. Programs like NERO have their own incorporated into the program. One thing about ASPI though, I've not heard of any problems caused by it being installed as long as it is done correctly.

Installed correctly? How else can it be installed "incorrectly" if you let it run it's course in default? I made no special selections when it was installed. When I put DVD Shrink on my PC, I went to NERO's website and installed the software DVDS needed to burn. At one point in time, it worked fine then one day, it started recording in 1x. I ran nero's drive speed util and my 16x stays at 4x. Popped a DVD-RW in it and it was 2x. I've already ran through the killaspi and installing them again. I'll figure it out sooner or later but thought I could find a quick fix here.

If you check around, you'll find XP wasn't intended to have ASPI. The interface is rarely needed. Also, you'll find there are installers with various versions of ASPI. With most things there is a right and wrong way, it holds true in this case. http://aspi.radified.com/ Use the link to read up on ASPI and the installation package. I believe ForceASPI 1.8 is about the latest installer to put ASPI in XP. The ForceASPI version in the article I suggest may not be up to date. I haven't checked the links on that piece lately. Right and wrong? Read the article and see if you can see a wrong way. If I was a betting man, I'd lay odds that ASPI won't solve your problem, even when installed correctly.

With Nero you'll find the infotool checks ASPI for Nero and the system. Normally with Nero infotool you will have a green "ASPI is installed and working properly" for Nero ASPI and a yellow "ASPI is not installed" under the System ASPI. Only when ASPI is installed properly will you get system ASPI showing up in Nero's infotool.
