I have a lite-on 851s drive. All I use are dvd-r's. I just stuck with what worked the first time. Much success.

holy cow, what a wealth of knowledge here...hi gang, I'm a newbie, got myself this new dell, a powerfull machine...and I'd like to make some backups of some of my dvds. well, I checked out what's available on the net, loads of programms downloadable, of course all claiming they're way cool and all....anyway, the only people I trust on these matters are the users. you fellas.
I've got record now and mydvd from sonic installed on my machine, works so far like a charm for cds. have not yet bought any other sort of software as of yet. wanted to ask you guys what I should get, what I should avoid, and so on and so forth.
There is one thing I'd like to know, when I make a backup of a dvd, will I also make a copy of the 5.1 sound, or will that be reduced to crappy 2.0?
One more thing, I've got a fairly old dvd-player, pioneer DV-606D, code-switchable. Now, this old player will not even read CD-R. Will it be able to read DVD copies, if so, what sort of blank DVDs must I use?
Lots of questions from a newbie...thanks for all/any output on your behalf,
    best, Amar.

oops...I apologize for writing this here before checking through the site for answers...I know how that is...:)

Amar, record now works very well for me when making dvd back-ups. I have a lite-on 851s drive no problems at all so far. Use dvd shrink to keep your 5.1 sound. I used 50 matrix dvd's from shop4tech .com with excellent results. They are cheap too. Hope it helps.

Deeman, are you saying that DVD Shrink will copy the 5.1 sound, but the other programs not? I guess i'm missunderstanding you.
    :)

No, all I'm saying is you have the option to remove different sound versions or keep them with dvd shrink.
    5.1 is just one option.

Hey sparker, the new dvd cloner install seems to work.
Although, seems to take more time than some other programs. Thanks for the support!

If you are talking about blanks I like matrix dvd's I buy from shop4tech.com. They're cheap and only had one coaster out of fifty. They also have worked on all of the dvd players I've tried. About eight different ones so far. 50 blanks with the cases will run you about 40 dollars.

    Deeman,

I suggest using better media. Crappy media can lead to burn or read problems.. then you could end up blaming the software.

Hey flip, are you saying crappy media can damage your drive after time?

I don't know about damaging a drive. but your disc could become unreadable.

Don't give up on the program... their new version is really good...I bought it back when it was 1.80 had such a hard time with it that I turned to other programs to do what I wanted... Now I pop the dvd in one drive a blank one in the other... click start. It asks me if I am sure... click yes... and walk away do what I want with other things. then out comes a perfect disk everytime I believe it you have your original email with the code.. Uninstalling and cleaning out your registry as was suggested with work.. But the best advise is to contact them asking about your problem and if you can do this.. (the uninstall) They take a while to get back to you but they always do.... but your money was well spent... yes there are other things to do the same... but you spent the money so get it to work

    briyam and jonnijon,

What all have you tried? What are your specs?

I'm now getting a lot of too big to fit on disk errors even on the smallest of movies. I think I will continue to try to fix this software off and on. It's become a hobby in itself. I've got all the other software I need. So maybe I'll just keep playing with this one. I do not however recommend this crappy program to anyone. Dvd cloner 2.2 is not worth it in my opinion. Still haven't burned one. Re- loaded software and it got a little better but still no dice.
