This is the first time I have tried to copy a dvd onto my hard drive using dvd shrink software and am getting a message "I/O error - copy protect". Can you please help?

Try downloading DVD decrypter (it's free) and use that to rip the movie to the hard drive and then use DVD Shrink in Re-Author mode to just extract the main title and then use Nero, DVD decrypter or what ever burning software you have.
    Lets know how you go.

You can also do the entire disc with extras and a menu or just the movie with a menu instead of movie only if you wish. As bardie said rip to your HD with decrypter in file mode. Then hit open files in shrink and browse to that folder from decrypter. It will then work exactly like you had the disc in your DVD-ROM drive.
