Hello, bought myself a sony dru-710A ddl dvd rw, plus some ddl disks with 8.5 gigs of capacity. My system is athlon 3000+, 2.1 GHz, 1 gig DDR ram PC3200 (400 hmz), and am having issues burning to the dvd. The nero software that came with it recognizes that there are 8000 mb to write to, the nero disk info tool states that the disk has a blank capacity of 7.96 gigs, so everything SEEMS correct. The problems are as follows: 1. I cannot get nero to add more than 3.8 gigs of data to be burned. It gives me a 'file not specified' (i think, not entirely sure, will have to replicate it) error. 2. In rooting about in the config settings, under expert settings, there is an area for DVD overburning. I thought that may be the problem, and I went to set it from the default 4600 MB to my desired 8000MB. It will not let me do this. fwiw, I am also getting a "aspi file(s) are missing" error in nero, including after reinstalling it. I have solved that problem, however. Currently I've set the jumper to master, and it has it's own IDE controller on the motherboard. There are no other devices on the cable. Anyone have any ideas? I can give a LOT more details if necessary. Let me know.
You've posted in the wrong section. You're describing hardware and software issues. Don't double post, ask a mod to put it in the right spot. Just a quick question. Did you select the DVD9 burn option in Nero?
wouldn't dream of double posting. Point me towards a mod, and I will be more than happy to request a move. I'm looking for a 'thread tools' link, and just not finding it. also, point me along the lines of adding an image. I do not have that option on the screen that you do. My nero shows the correct amount of mb to burn, with the proper warning lines and all, but I do not have an option to change the type of disks used. And thanks for the response. v

nero 6, suites I've tried are express and burning ROM SE. Forgot to mention the OS, xp home. in both suites when I attempt to add more than 3500 MB or so, the error that crops up is No Compatible File Found.

double checked the cmos setup, and it's listed as the primary master on the secondary connecter, which is correct. The jumper is set to master (i've also tried cable select) and the ribbon cable connecter is labeled master as well. I CAN burn to it; I don't know if it burned at double layer or not.

- too old, Nero 6.x is up to 6.6.0.18 now. What i will say is Nero 6.x has difficulty with the layer break on dual layer discs, not sure if it's been resolved fully even in 7.x as i neither do dual layer nor do i use 7.x. Without wanting to push you away from Nero there are a couple alternatives (free) that i read are fully able to deal with the layer break. But for now you should try updating your Nero to 6.6.0.18 and see if that helps; download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php What you can do to test further (in Nero) is do 'simulation' burns so as to not waste any more discs, simulation burns go thru the motions with a blank disc without writing to the disc, and produce a log entry afterwards, good or bad - newer version of your burner's firmware, BYX5, dated 25/10/05 is here - http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 - very strange..only 49MB to apparently burn to the disc.. - i can see that 3916MB is layer 1 - i haven't yet got around to figuring out how to fully decode dual layer logfiles but these last 3 lines look very much like Nero's not coping with the layer break see how you go with updating Nero and the firmware, try a simulation burn and let's have the resulting section of logfile...
creaky: appreciate the assistance. I will update to nero 6.6 tonight (work now). will also update the firmware. Need to google how to burn a sim disk (glad that I can reuse the disk, because those dang dl disk, in a 15 pack, cost almost as much as the burner itself), but should be able to find out how. no worries, i forgot to say how to do simulation..when you go to hit 'burn', you'll see a simulation tickbox just above it. tick that and untick burn (otherwise it'll sim burn THEN norm burn, highly annoying and completely undermines the whole point if you're not looking when you click (like i did recently)
okay, neither the flashing nor the new nero update did the trick....when I simulated a burn of 3 albums, I got a 'disk not supported' type of error.....below find both the text the history log and the error log, respectively.....I deleted the prior history log from the post as it is already here. fwiw, that disk that burned successfully did not play in a regular dvd drive. Is this going to be a common issue? If so, I think I should probably go with something that can be a bit more universally read; this is going to be offsite storage for a lot of personal files, such as home movies, music, and the like. v
A friend of mine says a lot of programs have problems with the layer break on DVD9 DL. He found that XCopy 5 works for him. Problem is, I know of no one selling that app at present. He says the video quality is good on his projector in his viewing room. I can't ask for a better testimonial. If flaws show, one would see it at that magnification. Back to the problem at hand. You may want to try an app other than Nero or at least try the Nero 7 trial to see if they've got the bugs worked out of DL burning. They quit updating 6 when 7 came along, so the flaws in Nero 6 (though few) are still there. DVD Shrink is a freebie that will record videos to DL. I noticed you were trying to record MP3 on DL, I don't know how that will work out, but I don't think Shrink or a lot of apps were intended for that. If it's going to be that much trouble, you may want to revert to doing it on DVD5, a few more discs, but they're still much cheaper. I use RB/CCE for compressing movies to DVD5, so no probem with my movies either. DL recording has been a problem since they brought it out. ...that's from the proud owner of 2 DL burners who doesn't use either for DL very often.

You're welcome. One thing that I've heard mention that sometimes helps with compatibility with standalone players is booktyping recordable media to DVD ROM (industry standard on DVD movies). I hear it works with +R as well as +R DL. It won't help if the DL isn't recording properly to start though. It only works with the (+R) format on certain drives (not all will booktype). Since you were recording MP3 with Express, those files would only be playable on some of the newer standalone players. Just because files are on DVD doesn't insure the player is capable of supporting the format. Till recently standalone DVD players wouldn't even play RW, now many play RW and MP3, as well as DivX and CD video and audio. So, be sure the player handles the format recorded. You can probably google and find more. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/273724 Looking at the economics, I still think the 4.7 (DVD5) media is the route to take. DL media is just now getting to where it is low enough in cost to actually use. Before it was more for "special" projects. In the beginning the blank DL media was so high, it was almost as cheap to buy a second retail movie or program than do a DL backup. I've bought burners with the expectation that DL might become more mainstream, but to date that really hasn't happened. With the difference in cost though, there's no reason not to buy DL drives, and in fact finding drives without DL capability is becoming less likely.
so, to paraphrase, you are saying stick with the drive, but get some non-dl disks? Heck of a lot easier solution. I'm assuming that those would be able to be burned in a non-dl fashion, and therefore readable universally? v
