i found this thread talking about compressing a dual layer dvd to a single layer dvd which is what i am trying to do. the problem that i am having is that after i run either mac the ripper or osex i get a file that is a .vob and when i use transcoder to compress that file it will only read mpeg2 files. now all the text that i have found says that both osex and mac the ripper export a mpeg2 file. what am i missing?

trying to copy a DVD this what you do.

    1. open mtr, do full disc extrac.
    2. use dvd2onex and shrink the video_ts folder to 4.36 gb.
3 burn with toast or disk utility.

note: dvd2onex coast 50 dollars and toast can be found at 65 and up.
also don't try to get all the software for free, dvd2onex is the best.

if you want to burn w. disk utility you need to make it an image file. which you can use
    dvdimager for that one.

so i am giving it a try and am using the DVD image program because when i try to use toast it says that there is not enough room on the disk. giving me an error that says 4.4 gigs (2314123 sectors) are needed and only 4.4 gigs (2298496 sectors) are available. now i don't know how many sectors are in a MB or i would just tell dvd2onex to make a smaller output. anyway my real question is how long dose dvd imager take because it has been running for hours now?

that happens sometimes with toast, but don't give up. take the compressed video_ts folder and run it with dvd2onex again, or the ripped one that came from the disc.

i think i might have figured it out you use the video part of toast. are there any settings in toast that i need to know about? i am trying a DVD-Video in NTSC format with nothing else selected.

no different settings. try to burn it this way.

    1. open toast and select the video tab.
    2. click on advance and then choose DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS.
    3. drag the video_ts and audio_ts folders into toast and burn.

also if it says that it doesn't have enough sectors then open dvd2onex. click on output and choose user defind. type in 4462 and the compress again.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

    [bold]Using DVD2One[/bold]
When you do your compression in DVD2One, you might consider reducing your output size from the default (4472 if I remember right). I always run mine at 4321. There are 2 reasons for this.

First, due variations in media, there are instances where a full 4472 is not really available for burning so your image will be too big if its 4472.

Second, and more important, DVD are burned from the center outward to the edge. If ever there is going to be trouble, it will occur at the outer edge. Using 4321 keeps my output away from the edge, but the 100MB isn't enough to effect the video quality.

    [bold]Using Toast[/bold]
When you burn in Toast you should be using the Data tab. In the advanced settings window (on the left, push the little ] to make it open) you should select DVD-UDF.

i gotta try that.. i'm using dvd2onex to compress.. then i run it thru popcorn for burn and its needs to compress down even more..
somewhere in here it even said to set it to 4462?
since i'm only on 1.42ghz, it does take a bit to do on dvd2onex and then another 20-25 minutes for popcorn to recompress and then burn.
and i cant cut stuff out because i'm doing the episodic dvds and i cant loose anything on it.
i did learn how to do it on dvd2onex.. and its coming through very good quality.

    happy burning everybody.

you're just telling everybody about the devil today... lol

i did redo it to the smaller size and now popcorn is just being used as the burn function.
