I have a single-layer DVD burner (Sony DVD +/-RW 8X DW-Q58A)internally on my laptop computer (which I keep docked). I have been using this for reading purposes and saving from DVD Fab Platinum unto the hard drive. THen, when burning onto a single or double layer, I have been using my Lacie (which is connected to the computer via USB). 1. Does the Sony have bitsetting/booktyping capability? 2. Is the quality of the Sony and Lacie equivalent? 3. Does it matter that the Sony is internal and the Lacie is externally hooked up? 4. If I'm reading a double-layered disc, does it matter which DVD drive I use, since the Sony cannot "burn" double layers? 5. If the original movie is single layered (or even double layered), which drive would you now recommend that I use for DVD Fab Platinum to save first onto the hard drive (before using Nero Recode), and which driver would you recommend to burn with (obviously, I can't use the Sony if I am burning a double-layered disc!)? Thanks again!!!!
@mrsurbie It's really not that bad and does get easier - you've had a bit of success so don't give up yet. Is this an HP pc? If it is here's a firmware update with a few fixes and some added support for media. link. If you have an update feature (like hp total care) with your pc might try accessing that way too. The link does have instructions on how to update. Using Patin-Couffin Switch DVDFab burning to Nero's. I thinkit's in common settings>dvd. Give those a go and keep us posted! @etsagr You laptop drive the Sony does burn dual layer - +R up to 4x. The drive is actually made by LiteOn - so it should booktype most do. The Lacie drive is either made by NEC or Pioneer - doesn't booktype. But if this is the LightScribe one it's made by BenQ and does support booktyping. To check if they support it pop a blank +R disc in the drive. In Nero go to Tools>CD-DVD Speed>extra>bitsetting. If the new setting option is available and you can change it to DVD-Rom then the drive booktypes. Nero should auto booktype with most LiteOn's and BenQ's. Looking at who actually made the Sony and Lacie - all are good drives. Laptop's drives can be a little less in the quality department - part of the problem is not a whole heck of a lot of air flow in laptops. Some manufacturers aren't great on giving them firmware support either. If this is a Dell laptop - the latest for the Sony is USD2. When your in CD-DVD Speed - the firmware version is listed right next to the drive (in the drop down). For the Lacie I'd need the model # to check the firmware. You can also check here in Nero too (just have the drive connected). Tools>InfoTool>drive tab. The make and model will be in the drop down and there's a field for the firmware version. Personally I'd probably use the Sony more to read and the Lacie more to burn. Or even switch it up a times. For reading the disc either should be able to read a dual layer - no problems there. For dual layer media I'd only use Verbatim - the best dual layer. def. want to make sure firmware is up to date. An iso is an image of the disc - contains the full thing. When you rip a dvd in file mode (by default most do) you'll get a folder containing all the files. An iso is just 1 file containing everything. ISO format is also compatible w/ players and drives.
Hi binkie7. I figured I'd write back to you again because you were very helpful previously. I had placed this question on a different forum, but didn't get much help, so I wanted to ask you again for help. I am using the Full Disc option in DVD Fab Platinum to copy a DVD to my hard drive. Then, using Nero Recode to burn to a DVD. (I like using Nero Recode b/c I feel I have more control over what to keep and also, I like the "advanced analysis" and improved burning that it offers). Although the movie is fine (has video and audio), the video files in the "Extras" folder lacks audio. I noticed this when I'm in the Nero Recode program, so I'm not sure if this is a problem with DVD Fab Platinum (decryptor) or Nero Recode. I don't get any audio (even in the movie) when previewing in DVD Decryptor, although when I burn it to the DVD, there is sound. So it seems that DVD decryptor is working fine and is able to obtain the audio from the original DVD and save it to my hard drive. The problem seems to be when using Nero Recode. I have made sure my firmware is up to date, and I have downloaded any updates to DVD decryptor and Nero. How do I resolve the problem so that I can get audio in the out-takes, trailors, etc.? This occurs with a lot of movies. I appreciate your advice.
Hi etsagr Check the audio for the files in Recode under the extras folder. Do you see audio files listed w/ a size? Click on an extra and play it - it will play with sound (if there is any) For the extras I leave all the audios checked except the foreign ones (if there are any). Usually these are small in size so no big diff in saving on compression. Plus some extras only come in 1 audio like 2-ch so unchecking that at the root of the extra folder in Recode can leave some extras with no audio. At the root of the folder Nero lists all the audios but all the different extras may not come in all of them (hope that makes sense)
THanks. All of the audio files in the Extras are checked off (i.e. Dolby Digital 5.1, 2 channel, etc.). While some of them play sound, others do not (even though I know that they have sound b/c it is a trailor or the director's commentary). The files that do not play sound do have a file size - i.e. 14 MB. So, I can't figure out if there seems to be a file, why there is no sound when I preview it? And when I end up burning to a DVD, there is no sound as well - so the preview is definitely accurate in telling me if the burned DVD will have sound in the extras. And again, it burns properly (w/ sound) if I use DVD Fab - but as I said, I prefer to use Nero for burning
Ok make sure there are check marks next to all the audios. I may be misreading your post but it sounds like there is no check mark next to the audios (?)
All of the audio files ARE checked. Yet, when I preview them in the miniscreen in Nero, there is no sound from the computer. And, when I burn them using Nero, there still is no sound. However, if I use Nero to burn the same DVD movie with the extras (that was saved on the hard drive and didn't produce sound using Nero), there is sound on the actual DVD. So, I know that the sound files are saved on the computer, but it seems that Nero is not accessing them. The audio files are listed under "Audio" and ARE ALL CHECKED. File sizes range from 1-15 MB. THere are Dolby 5.1 and 2 ch files, all which are checked. I am getting this with almost all of the movies that I attempt to burn. My firmware is up to date for the DVD drivers. And, I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Nero, along with downloading the latest updates to Nero from the Web.
Hmmm well I'm kinda stumped. If you save them to your hard drive w/ Recode then burn them separately w/ another Nero app I can't think of any setting right now that would cause you to lose the audio w/ trying to burn directly w/ Recode. You should be able to hear the audio when previewing in Recode. This probably has nothing to do with no sound on the dvd but go to recode then 'configure' under the more button. Change the audio in the preview window tab to another setting to see if you can hear the audio.
OK so before I really pull my hair out I followed this guide from BB something or other to the T would not let me burn so then tried with recode and this was the error file what the f**k am I doing wrong as I now have enough discs to build my own empire state building Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 2/11/2004 12:54:32 PM NT-SPTI used Nero API version: 7.7.5.1 Using interface version: 7.0.5.6 Installed in: C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\ Application: Ahead\Nero Recode Internal Version: 7, 7, 5, 1 Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B>Version: 1I24 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.7.5.1 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? Hello mrsurbie, I am probably the bb something or another you are talking about ;-) Anyway which guide did you use to try and copy your movie? Also what movie is this you are trying to do? I would recommend you use this guide Ripit4Me this is the most succesful guide by far for most people here. The features you like in Recode are also in DVDShrink which is used in this guide. I have a feeling your method might not be the best choice here. Even if you still want to use recode instead of Shrink you can still do that after letting RipIt4Me copy your DVD to your hard drive. You are also not using very good media to burn to those Sony discs have been giving people fits lately. Cheers
Hi bbmayo Thanks for taking the time to read my waffle and sorry if I sound frustrated, but well I am! I was using your guide for dvd fab and shrink, all went fine until the end it would not burn. I then tried the guide you suggested and that seemed to be fine up until the chosing the burn option it only gave me the ISO option and no Image Burn ISO option, I did have image burn on my computer but it did not open up automatically and even if I opened the program manually it and found the file it said device/media not ready. I was only trying to make a copy of three men and a baby, the iso file seems to be on my hard disc and I can find it no problem it is the final burn part. Have been using the Sony DVD+ disc but also tried the Vertibram DVD- disc still not joy, anyhow I have unistalled everything and will reinstall from your guide again and see how I go. Thanks
@mrsurbie Check this out too. Go to control panel>administrative tools>services. Scroll down to IMAPI CD Burning. Double click on it. If the service is started - stop it. If it's on it can sometimes interfere w/ burning.
thanks tried that and it said stopped so assume that is ok am going to uninstall everything and try again, do you think I should uninstall nero as well?? will it interfere
just tried to instal dvd decrypter and this error message came up I 15:51:26 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started! I 15:51:26 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 2) W 15:51:26 Drive D:\ (FAT32) does not support single files > 4 GB I 15:51:26 Initialising SPTI... I 15:51:26 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices... I 15:51:26 Found 1 DVD±RW! it says on the 4th line warning drive d does not support single files drive d is my recovery drive would this matter? Also when I try to install the Ain1 Installer I get the following error message All in one installer was not been totally installed because of the following reason canno establish a connection with data link, try again later you will have to run this utility again to completely install All in one installer i disabled my norton and i got further but had this error messsage anaylasis results ad476483 the file contains invlaid data or files that could not be found after install rip it 4 me does not open automatically will keep trying
The warning you get in decrypter is okay - the format of that drive is fat32 - meaning it doesn't support files over 4 gig. So if you were doing an iso decrypter would break it down in chunks. You can always format it to NTFS - just back up the data on there 1st.

Hi Marauding Welcome to aD Your best bet is to start a new thread and post the whole log - could be a few things. The whole log will help try and solve this. Plus looks like your using Vision - this thread is about DVDFab & Nero
