Why is it that when you buy an original dvd movie from a retailer, and say after many years the disk becomes unplayable you dont get a replacement copy, even when you send them the faulty disk?. A disk is just a medium on which a movie is put on , like a piece of paper. One should get a replacement copy for life. So if I have a certificate from a university degree , and the certificate gets destroyed in a fire I have to do the degree again, or will I get a replacement copy of the certificate.

with or without that piece of paper, you still hold the degree; that can't really be said for movies, which are transcribed on the media in your possession. i get your point, though.

and they wonder why piracy is such a problem. buying an original movie you still have the same rights as if buying a pirate movie, no replacement warranty.except that you pay up to $30 for a film. So whats the point of buying an original dvd movie for up to $30 if its going to become unplayable in a short while.

    Pirate dvd: original dvd:
    no replacement no replacement
becomes unplayable in while becomes unplayable in while
    cost $3 cost $30

We as honest customers need rights!

The guy at my local Video/DVD Store told me the diffrence between a retail version of the moive and a rental version of the movie.

    The difference is that.

    1. The retail burn is not done very deeply because the likelhood of the person playing it multiple times is less.

    2. And the rental is burnt deeply because it gets rented out and is played a number of times.

he's full of bovine excrement. there is absolutely no difference between the discs, other than movie rental chains buy them cheaper. none are burned; commercial dvds are pressed.

    *edit*
dvds [bold]are not[/bold] like the magnetic tape of vhs cassettes; there is no physical contact between the surface that is read and the actual dvd player. as long as your disc is a good pressing and isn't scratched or stored improperly, it will never wear out, no matter how many times you play it.

    LOL......Urban Myths.

Some companies (ie. Disney/BuenaVista) will offer replacements on "Registered DVDS". However, it does cost money ($6.95) for the replacements and I'm not sure what happens if the Dvd is no longer available (vaulted/OOP).
