Is it an MPEG of some sort ?

Did you burn as a VCD / SVCD ??

Media Player on your PC will play any file though so you've not given enough info for me to help any further mate.
If it was an .avi file it would explain why it wont play on stand alone DVD Player.Because it would need encoding to mpg (mpeg).
If it was an mpeg you would need to first choose VCD option in Nero (or perhaps SVCD)
Suggestion: Read up in Afterdawn Guides on VCD/SVCD

Sorry. Yes, it was a .avi file, and it didnt work in my dvd player. So in order for me to get this .avi file to work in my dvd player, I must convert/encode it to mpeg and burn SVCD... (but can I do it on a cd-r?) thanks...

Yes VCD or SVCD are CD-R , you may find that SVCD is a lot better quality so that is suggested over VCD.

But you will not need a DVD Burner to accomplish this task , you're right : )
