just ordered a compact computer with a 4 times dvd+rw/+r drive writer im hearing the -r drives are better for backing up ps2 games am i ok with the one i ordered or should i switch it? Thanks
OK, first off, this should have been asked in the PS/2 forum: http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/50 Secondly, are you buying a laptop? Or did you mean to say "Compaq?" If you meant Compaq, then you might be in trouble. Now, please don't take this the wrong way, but creating DVD's isn't something I would recommend for somebody new to computers. And if you don't know the name of one of the top computer manufacture's, you might be in trouble.
Comparing burning DVD's to burning CD's is like comparing driving a car to flying a plane; both involve controlling a motor vehicle. Just one is far more complicated than the other. The is [bold]a lot [/bold] of termanology that you need to be familiar with to have any success at backing up your DVD's, and if you don't understand the name of the company that you just gave $2000 to, you are going to have a tough time with DVD-R's. Keep in mind CD's came out commercially in the early 80's, and remain almost unchanged now. (Except Sony, who is experimenting with copy protection. But their "high tech" measures are no match for a sharpie." DVD's came out 6 or 7 years ago, and are based on modern methods of copy protection. It is getting around these measures that often proves difficult.
Mo, It's not too hard backing up a dvd movie, but when u start trying to do it to PS2 games it gets a little more difficult like Ken said.

motown35 Anyway to get BACK to ur original question Most standalones (modern/recent) are capable of reading dvd+r discs. Check ur standalones capability at www.dvdrhelp.com and go to to the dvd players section - here users have posted what discs have played in their machines - check urs out. Yes also alot of people are recommending to use dvd-r rather than dvd+r mainly because of incompatibility issues with their standalones If ur sole purpose is to backup ps2 games then I would check out the ps2 forum to see if people have had success with dvd+r burns, I do not know as I don't backup ps2 games. The last thing u want is to shell out mucho dinero for a machine, that is good but will not produce what u need. For the record I have a dvd-r rewriter and the compatibility is great. I have just bought a standalone dvd recorder to replace my vcr, this only burns to dvd+r format and the compatibility is still great. The dvd+r is great for editing - the technology allows u to do this whereas with a dvd-r u cannot. So it all depends on what u want to do. Personally at the moment if u can afford it I would purchase the sony rewriter - this baby can burn to dvd-r AND dvd+r so you could choose what to burn. Other than that I would plum for a dvd-r rewriter. Burning dvd's is a complex subject - but you have to start somewhere right, there are many guides available here (guides section) and also plenty of us that are only too happy to help. Anyway just my opinion, the decision is yours. Hope this helps.
