That wasn't directed at you personally, you know I think of you as a friend? But I'm growing weary of trying to prove that which I believe will never be proved. I'm not an enemy of DVD Shrink, just check my posts and you'll see that I've recommended it to newbies more than I have RB/CCE. RB/CCE isn’t for the first time users but Shrink is!

I’ll try keep my end to our “data collecting,” but that means that you’re going to have to provide RB/CCE results as well. There’s a difference between the results I got with DVD2DVD-R and RB/CCE. DVD2DVD-R should have had the advantage because it’s a movie only prog which means smaller file sizes, but RB/CCE was a clear winner. I used one of my son’s movies paycheck which is over 8 gigs for RB/CCE and a little over 7 for DVD2DVD-R.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, Sophocles. :/

If DVD RB was better than DVD2DVD-R, I will certainly have to give it another try.

    Thanks Double "D"

I don't see DVD Shrink and RB/CCE as being in competition, most people will do better with DVD Shrink but some of us would like a little more control.

I've just installed DVD RB v0.56, and started backing up LOTR-ROTK. :D

I guess it's gonna be "sleepin-with-earplugs" for me tonight. ;)
I hope I'll hear the alarm-clock tomorrow, lol.

Good luck, now is when you need a laptop, although I'm sick of them. I fixed over a dozen this week because teacher are to stupied to use them properly.

    Double D...

To answer your question, no, I haven't looked at the clips. For my own edification, however, I did my own analysis with RB-CCE, DVD2One, and Shrink 3.2 with ROTK just a couple of weeks ago. I also spent a significant amount of time on the project. My goal wasn't to be anti-shrink, but to find what worked best for my quality needs, which I consider to be primary. In the end, I liked the quality I got from CCE. And quite frankly, I considered it to be superior to Shrink 3.2 and DVD2One, which I also considered to be on par with each another. But this is just my opinion, and I am the one who must live with the results. I've avoided any "contest" because for me the question is settled. I'd like you to know that I often recommend Shrink to newbies because I believe it is a great training wheels program.

I will tell you that in my analysis I found that Shrink's pixel boundaries are "blended" in that there are not distinct boundaries within the P and B frame pixels. This creates a lot of room to "shrink" the video, and covers up any pixelation or artifacts. On the other hand, the I frames are mostly left intact, and these create the illusion of a sharp video much the way any video is basically an illusion - because our minds fill in the gaps between the 30 or so frames to create motion. Shrink uses blurred filler, and our minds, again, do the rest. This approach, in my way of thinking, was brilliant. But it can only go so far before it falls down. At the higher compressions the algorithms go after the I frames, and the hit is fairly big from the tests I have done.

In the end, I simply like the way CCE handles compression because of the clarity it provides.

Sophocles, I switched DVD RB to low priority, so I can still multi-task, if that's why you said I needed a laptop for. ;)

    Doc409 , I do appreciate your opinion.
I guess DVD2DVD-R and DVD-RB handle CCE differently, hence our contradicting results.
    However, DVD2One on-par with v3.2??

Anyway, I got an error with DVDRB and would appreciate your help:

    "There is nothing to do!
DVD-RB couldn't locate appropriate files in working directory!
You must PREPARE and ENCODE first.
    Aborting."

Nice use of capital letters, lol, I don't need for a proggy to shout at me. :D

Either RB is not completely set up properly, or you are not pointing to the right folder for the source.

Which version of CCE are you using. The error is similar to that when the ECLCCE file is not used with the trial versions.

Doc409, just to clarify a point for others who might read this thread, DVD Shrink start processing the P-frames last, after having worked on the B and I frame first.

The degree to which each frame type is compressed (the way DVD Srink tries and spread the compression) is dependent on the AEC mode used.
At "Maximum Sharpness", B-frames will be compressed almost to their maximum compressability before I-frames then P-frames are processed.
At "Maximum Smoothness", frame types will be compressed almost to the same degree, in relation to their maximum compressability.
    The other settings are in-betweens.

This is an oversimplified description, as the rest goes well above my head (error compensation, motion vectors, analysis >> maximum compressability, ...). :D

    Doc, I'm using 2.67 basic.
The source has been properly selected.
I don't know about the rest of the setup, all I can say is that DVD-RB spent 7 minutes analysing stuff and creating loads of tiny files before it threw this error. :/

P.S: if you're not busy, what about using the DVDShrink.info chatroom for helping me out?
    It's empty. :)

The B frames are compressed first but from what I've read from the review is that the P frames starts taking a hit around 20.5% and that increases with the size of the film. Now lest get you up and running with RB/CCE. BTW I don't use version 2.67 with RB I use the latest 2.69.10 abd I've never had a problem. Some unregistered versions or those using patches won't work.

In the DVD-RB Setup window I have two paths filled:

    Path to CCE SP (New).
Path to MPEG2DEC3DG (Ass to AVS File is checked).

The mode selected is "CCE Mode".
    "One Click Mode"
    "Dynamically assign cell bitrates"

    "AVS Options >> ConvertToYUY2()"

"CCE Options >> CCE Basic (v2.67+)"

I have both the CCE Basic and CCE SP (New) paths filled in.
I guess the latter is from my previous attempt at using DVD-RB, a few month ago.
I have edited the .ini file, and the path is now correct.

That's OK, I tried CCE SP with DVD2DVD-R and CCE basic 2.67 works better. With RB/CCE I use 2.69 the latest and it also works great. I have both versions installed into separate folders and it completes my needs. Remind me to introduce you to DVDremake for even more fun.

BTW I recommend Shrink to newbies to give them what they want and they want fast. But you and I and others like us like getting our hands dirty, really playing with the product and I don't see how those two things Shrink and CCE are incompatible.

    Same error. :(

The path to CCE is correct.
The path to MPEG2DEC3DG is correct.
The path to the decrypted files is correct.
The working directory path points to an empty folder, on a drive with more than 20gb of free space.

The CCE option is CCE Basic.
The mode is CCE, One click, Dynamically assign...
