Ok, guys, forget about the CCE/Shrink comparison tests.

What about comparison tests between the different DVD Shrink AEC options?
I know you do not have any use at all for these, but that could be quite helpful to DVD Shrink users with slow systems.

Are you looking for recommendations on the different settings? Such as, which setting should I use on an older, higher contrast movie, etc.?

 

In a nutshell, yes.

It would obviously be better if some comparison clips could be made and uploaded (I'd be providing the webspace and FTP account if neccessary).
DVD Shrink users (and others who might be interested) could then view the comparisons and make up their own minds as to what AEC option to use and when.

Did you manage to make a backup with RB/CCE? BTW make sure you're using Avisynth 2.54.

 

Sophocles, I only started the backup process two hours ago or so, so there should still be a while to go.

I'm using the latest version of Avisynth.
Not sure which one it is, though.

Avisynth 2.55 could give you errors although it worked for me. The preferred version is 2.54

Now I need to find what movie I should do as my second test.
Any suggestions?

Filters used with avisynth are for covering defects in the original movie or video if present. Like an old movie or tv series.
Rebuilder just puts out what is on the original disc.
If you wish, you can soften the details like DVDshrink on smooth setting.
You need to use 2.69 if your using basic. In CCE advanced settings on rebuilder go to quality_prec and up the setting from 16 to 20. It will look a lot like a shrink copy on smooth.
I usually go to 12 for additional sharpness. I feel the tv smoothes the picture out plenty already.

If you have Braveheart it is taxing on the compression also. Try on full disc.

For the record I think the max sharp setting on shrink is excellent. You should recomend that people try it for determining their own tastes.

Sharpness can make zoom in pictures look rougher but I find on a tv actually watching the movie it helps.

I'll try to augment the "quality_prec" setting, and see if it can diminish the "mosquito-noise" without compromising quality too much.

If you are noticing any kind of audible noise, it is highly unlikely that RB-CCE had anything to do with it.

The first thing I would check is to confirm that I had 80 conductor IDE cables, and not the old 40's. While the 40's do work, the extra wires were added to reduce inductance noise. This could be the "mosquito-noise" you are talking about.

 

Thanks Donald, but why would the noise appear only on the DVD-RB and DVD2DVD-R backups, and not the unprocessed title and DVD Shrink backup?

In any case, "Mosquito noise" created by CCE is a fairly well documented issue. :/

I have yet to notice this issue in all my backups.
Only noise that was in the original came through which of course is dampened by lack of detail when smoothing with shrink.
This is what I had noticed in you comparisons.
This must be your preference. I personally like the detail.

 

I figure the noise your talking about is banding if your encoding with the wrong settings if the links are accurately describing what your getting at.
Rebuilder is set smooth enough to start with that this shouldn't be a problem.
I have been bumping the setting with no banding at all.

 

Donald, I haven't made up CCE "mosquito noise" issue, it's simply what I and others see.
I will try and raise the quality_prec as you and others recommended.
I guess it is also highly dependent on the viewing equipment used.

I'm not trying to re-launch a DVD Shrink vs CCE debate, I'm simply trying to find out how to optimise CCE settings so as to get rid off the noise I'm seeing while avoiding smoothing.
