Call me crazy, but I just dont think Shrink does that bad a job. I have a 50" plasma that doesnt lie! It really depends on the situation though. A 3hr movie will DEFINITELY benefit from rebuilder!

I never use Shrink for my own purposes (will use it for the wife though). Shrink softens images (such as one might get when they turn down the sharpness control) which has the effect of hiding artifacts such as mosquito effect but it also hides fine detail. Dr. Shrink did this as a matter of purpose during his last beta test while becoming a member of Ahead software's Nero team. DVD Shrink like all transcoders tends to focus on cutting out Bi-directional most and predictive frames more than Intra frames which are essentially still shots.

Technically a transcoder is one that converts across formats which means that the result is something different than the original, something has changed, or actual video content is being removed. Reencoding means that every frame in a video is being reencoded to adjust for bitrate based on given available space, but nothing else is changes, and nothing is removed. For movies this can be quite effective since large portions of the content can easily have it's bitrate reduced without any changes to quality.

Often when movies are encoded the bitrate is based more on the number of frames in the movie compared to available space more than the movies actual bitrate requirements for particular portions of content. Why not use maximum bitrate if the space is there? It's easier to let the encoder calculate bitrate based on frames and available space since it can quickly count the number of frames and visual activity needed to produce the best over all quality.

Intra-coded" frames : average 7:1 reduction. P frames average about 20:1 reduction, and B frames averaging about 50:1 reduction.
