Was the first DVD -R a Memorex as well and were they the same speed and made by the same manufacturer?
The first was burned at 4X while the second one was at 8X. The only other diffference was the audio selection, i.e. There were different Dolby selections and I really did not know which one to pick.
Write errors may increase as the write speed increases. Try backing the speed back off to 4X. This can sometimes have an effect with dodgy media. Give it a try and let us know what happens. If not the fix, then at least one possibility out of the way. CMC has been the manufacturer of a lot of Memorex media, and a number of people have reported problems with it. If the slower burn doesn't work, try another brand to see if that helps. Get something like the Sony +R, there's no CMC in those.
Download DVD Identifier and let us know what the manufacturer code is on the media you're using. It's free.
CMC does appear to be the mnufacturer. I also copied this information. Maybe it does not copy at speeds faster than 7.X ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:CMC MAG. AM3] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R] Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.] Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG. AM3] Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ DVD Identifier V4.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for your help. I am learning things much quicker with the help on this forum
DVD X Copy was the first software I used. I since have upgraded to ANYDVD, Shrink, Clone, etc. but I kept my Xcopy just for the RescueDVD program that came with it. Whenever I have gotten the cyclic redundancy errors - or any others that for one reason or another the others had issues reading, I use Rescue and in easily 99% of the instances it came through like a champ.
I am just now starting to burn it again at 4X. However, the first one I burned that did not play on my home DVD player plays just fine on my laptop. So...the program did burn it OK..it just won't play on my home unit. Why would the speed affect which unit can playback? All my other Memorex DVD-R have played fine on my home unit. So, even though the first one works on my laptop, I am going to burn it again at 4X just to see if that makes a difference. Will let you know in about an hour
brobear...one question before I start the burn. I'm not sure what to check under the Audio & Subtitle Settings Audio Streams--do I pick English Dolby AC-3/6 or the AC-3/2 or both? Audio Channels--2,5, or 6 channel Audio Encoding--Dolby AC3 or DTS TIA
just check the 6 channel the audio will default out to 2 channel if your not running it though a surround sound system. and if you have or want Dolby AC3 or DTS check it also. either way wont affect the playback of the movie
AC3 is your typical system, It takes special equipment fot DTS. Recording both tracks takes quite a bit of space and can contribute to compression errors. If the recorded DVDs are playing good on your PC and not the standalone, you may have run into a compatibility problem. If possible, try them on another standalone player.
OK, I made another copy of Lord of War at 4X and it works in all the players. I used an Imation DVD +R. I made another copy of another film using the Memorex again, this time at 4X, and it plays in the Panasonic. I think that the first DVD I made that would not play in the Panasonic was just a fluke. Anyway, bottom line is that Clone DVD2 and Any DVD seem to be performing better than the DVD XCopy Platinum I had before. Thanks to all for your information
@vonschr One thing to remember with Xcopy you cannot control burn speed, so if you are having problems with less than good media burned at a higher speed, using Xcopy will only cause more problems.
clonedvd 2 with anydvd is your best bet MUCH better than the defunked dvd x copy ,and also you might consider better media ,hate to break it to you but memorex and or imation is the worst media one can buy use Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim you be a MUCH happier camper
Well lets say some of those anyway. CMC manufactures DVDs sold under both the Imation and Memorex brand. I'm not sure what the current sales picture is for Imation, but much of the +R was made by Ricoh which is made in Taiwan. Ricoh is the good stuff. There was an Indian company making some of it, but that would carry a made in India tag. Much of Imations's -R was manufactured by CMC which manufactures much of the media sold by Memorex. I've got a large number of backups on Memorex-Ricoh and they're good quality. Too bad Memorex doesn't sell those any more. As for DVDXCopy, there's a number of workarounds for the app. If burn speed is a problem, a person can burn the output file with a burner app that has a speed control instead of letting XCopy burn and erase the file. If XCopy is starting to be a real pain though, I'd suggest moving on; little support left and the app did have more problems than most.
@vonschr Would you run DVD Identifier (freeware) and tell us what the manufacturer info on the Imation +R is? By the way, AnyDVD is a keeper, but you may want to shop around before settling on CloneDVD2. A favorite of mine for transcoders is DVDCopy 4 from InterVideo. http://www.InterVideo.com/ Another good one is Recode2 in the Nero burning suite, Nero 6 or Nero 7. Both Nero and InterVideo have full function trials you can use for a road test and the DVDs you back up won't have logos on the screen like some trials. Nero has unlimited trial downloads, but requires the occasional reload. The program I use all the time is for high quality backups and takes a bit more time per job. I use Rebuilder with Cinema Craft Encoder (RB/CCE). Rebuilder has other supported encoders such as the free HC which does a good job, just a bit slower than CCE. You can actually try that one out for free and there is an installer, so setup is easy. http://www.dvd-rb.com
Nothing to worry about on that one. As I said, the Ricoh is good "stuff". I've had excellent success with Ricoh media. I've burned a lot of media and I've used more Ricoh under various brands than any of the other media I've used.
Hey all, I have hit a snag. I am thinking it is another bad disc, as was the forgotten. I have tried dvdd, dvdfab, clonedvd, nero recode, and vobblanker, all with anydvd in the background. None of them work. The movie is lords of dogtown. It would've worked with at LEAST one of these methods, correct? (btw, not to get off subject brobear, but is your quote from the comic Grendel, or the movie baowolf with C. Lambert?)
Actually Beowulf was an old Anglo-Saxon story. The early manuscripts are in Old English. There have been retellings of the Beowulf saga and the quote by Grendel is from one told from the perspective of Grendel. The characters have been around much longer than comic books and movies.
