Yes, I always go for the best possible picture which is why I use DVD-RB/CCE Basic. When the new version of Shrink is out I'll give a fair go and if it is as good as I hope is then I'll have all the tools I need. I still use shrink for ripping. _X_X_X_X_X_[small] "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." When I use Shrink I prefer to use "Deep analysis." Some backups with minimal compression (5 to 5.5 gigs} don't seem to benefit from deep analysis much but when the files start coming in at around 6 gigs then using deep amalysis is a no-brainer. Even with deep analysis it is still quicker than DVD-RB/CCE. I do have Nero Ultra and I've used recode a few times especially when I was playing around with anyDVD. One feature on recode that I really llked was the slide bars for adjusting video quality. By the time I became aware that shrink was also involved in the development of Nero Recode I'd already moved on to using CCE Basic. I still have a little more than 2 weeks of my summer holiday (I'm a school teacher)and with the current prices on Ridata at Newegg.com I have lots of good quality media to experiment with. I'll go back over recode again soon. _X_X_X_X_X_[small] "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." Evening Sophocles, I was wondering where you'd gotten off to. Hopefully the improved Shrink will be out in a few days so everyone can give it a try out. The deep analysis seems to be even deeper. The picture stays the same, but it works with higher compression. There are a couple of Quality Settings adjustments for B and P picture compression that seem to help as well. They are on the window that pops up when you enter Backup. I had it working at a little over 30% compression and the picture was as good as the older version at low compression (all quality option on). It took right at 2 hrs to record Pirates of the Caribbean.
brobear, I think Sophocles has gone off to do some comparative tests. You do not have the Afterdown exclusivity anymore.
@brobear I've not done enough backups yet to really comment on the new version of Shrink. The Godfather backup I did today seems promising considering that it's a 175 minute movie. Give me a couple of days to try some of the other features and then I'll have something solid to report. _X_X_X_X_X_[small] "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." Sophocles, I'm glad to hear the "Godfather" backup turned out to be promising. I would just like to add that the two new "Quality Options" are the only new features in the beta (the ability to output as "split" ISO for FAT32 users is in the process of being implemented). It is also recommended to use both these options for DVD Shrink optimum output quality at fairly high levels of compression (> 30%). _X_X_X_X_X_[small]~ ddlooping~ For DVD Shrink and related softwares guides and downloads, please visit http://www.dvdshrink.info[/small]
@ddlooping I wanted to do dry run first with only deep analysis so that I can use it as a control so that when I introduce variables I will have a stable point of comparison for them.
I was familiar with the older Shrink and then went in full gun and turned everything on for maximum effect. Sophocles analysis will give a better picture of the separate controls and their contribution to the total effect of the program. Hope you explained about the different frame types in the manual ddlooping, as the general public won't know what they are pushing the button for without some explanation.
I did a seond copy of the Godfaher using Shrink with all of the quality settings turned on. I will make the cmparisons later today. When I said promising I was referring to its stabiliy and it seems stable enough to go gold. The picture was a little soft but that's using the old Shrinks features and the Godfather was intentionally filmed to look somber. I've not done a back to back comparison between the various backups yet but the discs are made and ready to go. I'll let you know later today. I want to find another disc to backup today that didn't use the artistic photogaphy used in the Godfather. I have plenty in my collection now I just have to choose.
Pete Its still in Beta and not out to the public yet. Should be sometime in the near future. This improved version does a good job with the higher compression. There are some minor quality settings that make a world of difference. The noticable differences don't start being noticable until you get to about 25 to 30% compression. It doesn't break under load like the previous versions.
Hi Pete. I'm affraid the beta versions are not publicly available yet. Following a somewhat "heated debate" between members of these forums and myself, I asked dvdshrink if I could release the betas to brobear and Sophocles. The condition was for them not to distribute the betas. The good news is v3.2 Final should be released before the week-end.
Hey Pete Lag. Just as ddlooping said but I will let you know the minute it hits. @ddlooping Could you post the link that shows the new features? _X_X_X_X_X_[small] "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." Hey Pete brobears means it's the same old Shrink with a couple of new options that allows for greater picture quality. Add deep analysis to the new features and you have a greatly improved Shrink.
