DVDDecrypter - Semaphore Period Timeout Expired

Hello everyone! Thank you for taking the time to read my thread and maybe offer some advice! So here it goes...

Before I begin with my problem, here are my specs:

[bold]Burner[/bold]:
MAD DOG MD-16xDVD9-EXT (External USB 2.0)
Type: DVDR+/-R/RW DL Recorder
Firmware Version: 2.FD
Buffer Size: 2MB

[bold]Computer[/bold]:
Windows XP PRO - SP2 w/ Advanced Technologies
Intel(R) Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz
3.19 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
HDD1: 40 GB / HDD2: 120 GB

I am currently having issues with burning a [bold].iso/.img/.dvd [/bold]image file onto dvd using [bold]DVD Decrypter[/bold] and [bold]Nero Burning ROM[/bold].

I get the following error when I attempt to burn using DVD Decrypter:


"Semaphore Period Timeout Expired"

I am not sure what that error is but from reading other threads with similiar problems, it means that there is a lack of connection between the device and the computer. After I receive that error, I click retry and get the following error dialog:


"Interpretation: Check Condition"


This is what I get when I attempt to burn an image using NERO:


"Burn Reset - Burn Process failed at #x"
(where # == 2,4,6,8,12,14,16)

It does not matter at what speed I try to burn, I get the same errors on both programs. I have checked to see and make sure I do have a USB port and Device Manager appears to show so:


"Standard Enchanced USB"

I also have checked to make sure my ASPI drivers are installed and working properly, I have tried v4.71a.2 but thought it could have been that version that could cause the errors since it has many issues so I downgraded to a more supposily stable version, 4.60 in which this case I downloaded - ForceASPI v1.7:


"ForceASPI v1.7 (consist of adaptec aspi v4.60)"

I have no clue what could be causing this error. The external dvd writer drive does however burn CDRs with no problems and does play DVD movies w/out any hassle, but when it comes to burning DVDRs, there comes the problem. It does however from time to time, maybe 1/20 tries, it burns a dvd.

this can be a lot of hassle to get rid of this, the best way i know are people change to FIREWIRE from USB...

 

[bold]Whoa[/bold]! You guys are really fast in responding to my thread. I therefore thank you for taking out the time and effort in giving me such feedback.

Creaky - I have checked out all those threads and tried doing what they have been told also but it was not any much different, I still get the same error msgs.

Rotary - I will convert over to firewire as soon as I get my ass out to go buy it which should be in about 2 hours. Just a question though, why would the firewire make a difference? I thought USB 2.0 (up to 480Mbits/s)is faster than firewire (up to 400Mbits/s) - wouldn't that change the communication rate?

Are there any further suggestions that would be able to help me fix this problem?

you may be right on speed re usb to firewire but all sites i have read on this say to do it! i did a look round for you...

something to do with usb drivers or associated usb stuff, where firewire doesnt have this problem

but burning dvdrs wont be going at 480 meg a second transfer

i did spend alot of time on this with someone else and did even more searching to track this prob down but couldnt get it to work for them...

another one was the the chip in the extrenal case, some changed housing types and got it to work some not!!

 

Switching to firewire may be your best shot, as I do not think you want to either replace your enclosure or pull the drive and use it as an external because those are the rest of the options. Here is a little more info on your Nero error, from Digital Digest

 

Thanks for all the help fellas. Nothing seems to be helping it though, I wonder why this shit's gotta happen.

It's pretty dumb to have to buy a DVDRW and then not work, and next having to buy a new external case to convert it to firewire, and last of all is to take it apart ot of it's case and make it an internal drive to solve all issues. It takes the point of it being an "external drive".

Wonder why these companies dont work around these problems and make our life easier ;p

I've tried everything that people have said and read tons of thread and nothing seems to be working. Sent it back to the company under warranty and they sent me it back said it was fixed. Guess NOT!

Now I just gotta go out to some store, buy a neweer model of it. Keep that new model, put my model back in the box and ask for a return and hopfully they wont check the serial # to verify its the right burner ;p LOL

its not the burner its the housing (the onboard chip)

 

Unless I missed it, I didn't see any mention of the media you are using.....it could be bad media. And believe it or not, there are some media this forum highly recommends NOT using.

[bold]Rotary[/bold]... What do you mean the housing (onboard chip)? Would you be referring to the external housing case or would you be referring towards the pc/motherboard chipping...
