bigorange what is the difference between the select target device when it says ISO image and hard disk folder. which one will i need if i am going to back up with either nero or decrypter
If you have a dvd-rom AND a writer, your target device will be your writer and your computer will need a folder for your temporary files. If not you will choose your hard disc folder and then burn from there since it can't read and write at the same time. I think that's what you're asking. If not, I need more info.
but if i dont want to make it a temp leave it on my hard drive so i can burn later, which one will i choose, simple because i want to have all my movies on my hard drive
Not sure why you would want to do that considering the size of a movie, it doesn't take many to use up all your available memory. But you answered your own question, you send it to your HD folder. Again why wouldn't you go ahead and burn to your media and create your back-up?
my hard is 480 gigs. and i'm putting all the movies i can on my hard drive until i find the right media. i burned a movie and used sony disc and it only played on my sony dvd players. so i am waiting until i can get a great suggestion on the right media. do you have any suggestions?
bigorange You're right, he now has enough useful info (if he doesn't listen to some of the off the wall stuff) to start copying with a variety of software setups. I have had Platinum for a long time, so I know a lot of the foibles of 321 software. For me, to do what sheethead wants to do, a movie only with menus, takes about 3 or four more mouse clicks and maybe a couple of minutes to look at the titlesets, choose the movie, preview it for a couple of seconds to insure I have the right file and continue to burn. At that [Use Compression] stage a person can choose to split a disc in half instead of compressing. I burn with a different method than the one I taught sheethead above. The part with Platinum is the same. When I do most of my burns, I use DVD Decrypter in ISO Read mode to rip into an ISO file. I load that into the emulator program Daemon. Run the decrypted file through the Platinum RF. If I see I need to trim down a big movie, like the 'Pirates of The Caribbean', I resort to Decrypter, Daemon, Shrink, and Nero. It makes it easy as Shrink and Nero function as one entity for the edit-burn process. I choose Decrypter because it is the best ripper, bare none I have seen. Doesn't hurt is a freebie. As Shrink uses the .mds and the selected .iso file, the Shrink runs faster than if it was the ripper. Shrink is hard to beat at editing, especially when the task is slimming down a big movie to reduce compression. Hit the Backup and the burn goes without touching the Nero console and you're burning with one of the best burner programs on the market. The only time I have ever had a coaster was due to bad media. When I have a poor functioning disc I check the original file on the hard drive. A nice perk for using Decrypter in ISO with Daemon. Then I run the disc through DVDinfopro to see where the read errors occurred, sort of to appease my curiosity. A quickie check is to put the copied disc through Shrink and let the quick analysis do the check. You'd be surprised what that quick test will show. I've found flawed recordings that will still play good on a player with the Shrink quick check. And found I have had problems faster than with the dedicated programs. There are other ripper programs on the PC. I have the AnyDVD as well as the Decrypter, VStrip, and Shrink. Those and my old Platinum as well as GamesXCopy will rip. The editing Programs consist of Shrink, Platinum with ripper and RF, DVD2ONE, CloneDVD2, and GamesXCopy. The burners are the 2 Platinums, CloneDVD2, Nero, Roxio, and DVD Decrypter in ISO Write mode. Daemon is the only emulator I use. They have a download with the CloneDVD2, but it was sort of cheesy and I don't use it. I sort of like CloneDVD2, but I hate the corny animation. I try to keep the recording formula down to rip - load - edit and - burn without repeating processes with the software. And then I can use the Shrink and DVDinfopro for checking the end product. You can see the many combinations I can come up with to cover just about any eventuality. I guess I'm a software junky. I'm proficient with all of the programs. I prefer working iso to video_ts. Guess you noticed that from the mention of emulator usage. When you are use to them they can be used with more software programs. You can imagine the fun I've been having. I enjoy working with the backups for the various family members. I usually only take a few minutes longer doing a complete edit than most people working a 'one button wonder'. I sort of like doing things differently, its a learning experience. Happy Trails and let's hope them basketball Cats do as well as the Vols do in football. Dual sport fan here. Go Lakers. _ _X_X_X_X_X_[small][bold]'brobear'[/bold] [/small]
bigorange You use an iso file to backup when burning with Decrypter in the ISO Write mode. To use a iso file to burn with Nero it would need to be loaded in an emulator, such as Daemon. Decrypter can rip into an ISO , IFO, or video_ts file (the file option). Decryptor can only burn ISO files in ISO Write mode. Decrypter can't burn Video-TS but those automaticly load and burn in Nero. Hope that answers your question. _X_X_X_X_X_[small][bold]'brobear'[/bold] [/small]
cazanova, Decrypt the files onto the hard drive with Decrypter in the ISO Write mode. For Playback you load on an emulator like Daemon. You can run a search with the keyword Daemon and you can see what I say about it. DVD -R is the most common format today. A lot of folks swear by Ritek. Me, I've burned a lot with Imation and Memorex, as well as Verbatim and some other brands. I've had only a few coasters due to the media. Guess I've been lucky. But you can waste a lot of bucks going either way. High price compared to losses with cheap media. It's a toss up. I'd try the regular brands at Wal Mart and see what happens. _ _X_X_X_X_X_[small][bold]'brobear'[/bold] [/small]
cazanova- if you've read this forum at all you know the prefered brands are branded verbatims and branded Ritek G04's. I have NEVER had a problem with either. You can get the G04's at Meritline now for .71/100, free shipping. Look around this forum, you'll see what I mean(we're in the wrong place to talk about this, so that's all I have to say about that. [bold]brobear[bold]- Love those Cats in B-ball! Great to hear from another sports addict (Sportscenter EVERY morning). I too, have a million other softwares, basically because I didn't know what the hell I was doing when I first got into this. So I too play around with different combo's. I gotta say tho, I don't see how it can get any simpler than recode2 used with Anydvd. Talk about one-click burning! It comes close. Also it makes a great video even with 50% compression(tho I don't normally do that, I have). Like I said before, if there was only one way what would we have to talk about? GOOOOOOOO VOLS!!!!!!!!!
my bad for being in the wrong forum with these questions its just that i had to find where the experts were available. but one quick question. Brobear Is Daemon within thte nero program. or do i have to buy it.
no problem cazanova, no, it's not in nero. Hey brobear, did you mean cazanova? (he's the one asking, I think I misunderstood him) Oh well, I think I'll have a drink of Jack (or2), it's Friday, CHEERS....
Wow, you guys are the best, have to change my handle from sheethead to bloatedhead with all the info you've now given me. brobear Damn that's almost like a documentary you've written there, for sure I need to print and follow your directions. I did know about the packet writing conflict with DirectCD and INCD. I sincerely appreciate all your time and effort. bigorange, I will also print the simple instructions you gave and give that a try. A very good suggestion you made, I'm going to practice with a R\W so the only thing I lose is time. Since I've written my last post I have downloaded AnyDVD and CloneDVD, I've got em all now. AnyDVD is sweet, runs in the background as you said, you can even hide the icon in the toolbar. For your information, it does use about 4MB memory when running (check task manager), it's not that much, however, the more crap you have running things tend to slow down. I try to keep nothing unnecessary running on startup, almost all programs want to run on startup, total waste of resources. Just put a shortcut on your desktop or Start/Programs folder and click on it and it will run, do this right before you want to burn , after burn just exit and resources are free. I started AnyDVD and burned a keeper with Clone CD with only the movie and menu with scene selection. It's pretty easy to use but far too slow for my taste. The Lite-On burner I have can burn 4x media at 8x and it still took over an hour to burn the 100 minute Scissorhands movie. My next experiment will be with running ANYDVD and using Nero again, with all the information you and brobear have provided I think even an idiot can do it. My wife also calls me that on occasion, and rightfully so. I tell her I must be one to have married you. Just kidding, I love her dearly and she’s still my bride after 31 years. I can’t thank you guys enough for holding me by the hand and walking me through this, you gave me all the tools, now I just have to practice and apply them. I’ll find what works best and stick with it and become more proficient.
cazanova, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/86734 goes to the article I wrote on DAEMON Below is the URL for the DAEMON site. http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php If you can't find a manual there, go to http://www.doom9.org . Doom9 is a good site to check out anyway. They have in depth manuals for most of the programs they talk about here on AfterDawn. bigorange Sometimes the fun is in the difference. No doubt the software you refer to is excellent. I've used them. As you know, people just have a tendency to develop favorites for no real reason. Most of the programs and the ones you mentioned are excellent. As I said, after a while, when a person can make an informed decision, it is a matter of personal preference in most cases. The only difference is when you have an editing program that will do a particular job the other programs can't. Time for a swig of 'Old Barton'. _X_X_X_X_X_[small][bold]'brobear'[/bold] [/small]
sheethead For Nero to handle the video files properly with only AnyDVD, you would have to purchase the DVDvideo plugin. They don't let that one out of the house before you pay. The plugin can be purchased and downloaded from the Nero site. unless you are dealing with files below 4.7 GB, you will have to use more than just AnyDVD and Nero if your movie is over the size of the target disc at all. Here's how the recipe works: rip - edit - burn (in the simplest terms) AnyDVD only lifts the encryption, you still have to extract the file and transfer to Nero to burn. That file extraction requires another program, unless you load directly to Nero (an editing program). That editor will have to be capable of compression if what you want to record is larger than the disc you want to record to. DVD Shrink is a good editing program that uses Nero as the default burner and Nero can run at 8x. You hit [backup] in Shrink and Nero will burn the file automatically. You can use Nero by itself (with the plugin)with the AnyDVD, but the file you are going to write can not be any larger than the disc you are going to record to or you will have to put the material on more than one disk. I've never used Nero to 'split'. AnyDVD + DVD Shrink + Nero would work out well. rip - edit- burn By the way DVD Shrink is free and you can get an in depth guide at doom9. all the URLs are above. _ _ _X_X_X_X_X_[small][bold]'brobear'[/bold] [/small]
Sorry brobear, not true. I got the plug-in for free with an update and you CAN go directly into Nero recode2 without doing anything else. It will extract your dvd compliant files. There are plug-ins nero sells but you won't need them for this. Be sure and download your power pack 1&2 and while you're there get all your updates for nero 6, you can find it on the nero homepage, this will give you everything you need. Powerpack 3 is incd(you don't need) and 4 is nero showtime (I like it, up to you). None of this will cost a dime. Promise. IT will shrink and compress, do anything shrink does easier and better (for me anyway, sometimes I get audio snags with shrink) and yes- Jack Daniels is talking for me now. I used to be a BIG Shrink fan until scuba pete turned me on to recode2. I had heard not-so-great things about it and didn't use it. Now I am a convert. I think brobear (who knows his sheeaat)is talking about nerovision express and burning rom. And for that , what he says is true, but not recode. I've put 8-9 GB's on one disc with recode2. Whew! with that good nite to all, I think I'll go watch a back-up made just the way I stated. Afterthought- rip(anydvd),edit,burn(recode2)
Hey bigorange, Would have replied and informed all, but the holidays and celebrating slows me down. The 'Skinny' Yes Irene, pigs do fly. Recode 2 does an excellent job of recording the movies. And, as you said, all you have to do is run AnyDVD and Nero Recode2 to do the job. (no guides for X Copy though) Excellent results. Now for the down side... [bold]The Down Side[/bold] Nero comes in a demoversion, free trial, then you have to purchase a license when the trial period expires (unless your buddy shares his and the rules say no sharing). Unless you have the new demo or a full retail version, you have to obtain two (2) licensed plugins. Even after licensing, my trialware version would not operate recode without the retail plugins. So free boils down to what version you have or how long the demo lasts. I had to go back to Nero for the DVD Video plugin and the Multichanell plugin. The video plugin is for handling the video files and multichanell is for handling the newer Dolby audio. [bold]Not For Free[/bold] As I said, with the trialware version, you have to purchase the video and audio plugins. The only way this is free is when one has the license for the expensive, full retail version. I personally found this out. I had to go back and get the plugins myself. Once again, Nero does an excellent job of burning and the quality is superior. If you get off the greenbacks. The burn is fast, but the prep time is a little slow. The burn was 15 minutes of the total 1 hr and 22 minutes for 'The Return of the King'. This was done on a high capacity system, so limited computer capacity (CPU - RAM - Hard Drive) was not an issue. Recode2 is so good in fact that I use it for backing up my more valuable (large)movies. I don't use it when I am in a hurry or when the files are within the 70% - 100% compression range. As I've said before, different tools for different jobs. Its a matter of preference. To date, I have had no audio snags or any other problems with DVD Shrink. So, it stays in the software library with the other good programs. To conclude: I like Nero recode2 (only the demo is free and then you pay), and I like DVD Shrink. I also like DVD X Copy, which this thread was originally about. _X_X_X_X_X_[small][bold]'brobear'[/bold] [/small]
Good to hear from ya. I had a little Jack binge myself, felt bad this morning, so a little hair of the dog and oops..... I just wrote to you in another thread at 4:00am and wham-got this one. coincidence, I think not! On the nero, I never used the trial version, just upped and paid the 59.00 and haven't had to purchase anything else. Got all the plug-ins I needed, and the power-pack downloads and the rest of the updates and wha-laa everything works. I really like the cover design program too(can't tell the difference with covers from cdcovers.cc). any way, good to hear from ya, where's your bear?
One thing I forgot to mention is the amount of system resources required to run Recode2. You can check out the specs at http://www.nero.com/us/nero6-ultraedition.php . This is not a program for low capacity PCs. If people will read the instructions, they will know why those little PCs are dropping dead all over the place (in like 'Nero made my PC crash')
