I am looking for simple, no frills, easy to use, and prefferably free program that I can use to shorten mp3s and save them to a smaller file. Basically I want to cut a 30-40 second segment of a full song to use as a ringtone. I was able to do this and save it at a lower quality format using the trial version of AV music morpher, but the full software costs $100, which is alot more than I need and am willing to spend. So if anyone knows of anything I could try, pass it on. Thanks.

Audacity is a free audio editor that should suit your needs just fine.

Audacity may be a little more than what you want. If so, take a look at this one. MP3 Direct Cut

very true. A couple other good mp3 splitters are Mp3 Surgeon and Mp3 Splitter & Joiner.
