Hey everyone, whenever I try to use my NEC burner instead of my Pioneer 111D I get an error in IMGBurn (my main program) that says (BTW, this happens in both XP and Vista):

    Hi jp110099
    Here's a few suggestions:
    NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A 1.06
    Update the firmware to 1.07

    Disc ID: MBIPG101-R05-01
Not the greatest here media wise and they may not be compatible w/ the NEC. Better to use would be Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

    Write Speed: MAX
Take the burn speed down to 8x.

Give those a go and let us know.

Thanks for your help. I used a Sony DVD+R and the new firmware and it worked flawlessly. I thought Memorex made decent media?

    Your welcome!
Memorex is not known for quality media so I'd stay away from it. They use several different manufacturers - some not all that great. You never know who you might get.

Memorex does not make their own media. They source from "decent" suppliers, not all of whom are as well supported in drives as others. In your case your NEC drive with the older firmware did not apply the correct write strategy to the DVD+R disc and could not burn the disc properly--even if it were the best disc in the world. The 1.07 firmware update may have changed the results; but if NEC did not add the MBI code to the ND-3550 1.07 firmware, the results would have been the same. The Sony disc you tried was supported by the 1.07 firmware, and it worked well. However, if the older 1.06 firmware did not support the Sony MID code, the Sony disc might also have failed. That would not make any difference in the quality of the Sony disc, only in the compatibility of the disc and drive.

If your Pioneer drive records to the MBI discs, stick with that drive for them. You might want to see if firmware version 1.07 added MBI support to the ND-3550, but you would waste a disc in case it did not. What you cannot do is draw any conclusion about the quality of the discs with the MBI code until you find a drive/firmware version that will record them.
