Burn @ 4-8x and make sure your firmware is up-to-date.

Here is the latest firmware for your drive (that I could find a working link to anyway)..
    http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/ODD/SHW-160P6S/firmware/DR16PS0B.rar

Download, extract and run that. Before running, make sure you have nothing else running and no disc in the drive.

POst the rest of your error log here for us to look at plz.

    A few things..

The media (discs) you are using isn't very good. Buy some better ones such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and you should be good to go.

You have Roxio software installed which can, and does, conflict with Nero - it is advised that you get rid of it. Download and run this tool to do that..
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Now, if you do that and slow your burn speed to 8x then you should be good to go.

However, if you STILL encounter problems, then I'll osrt you out with steps to update your version of Nero as you're running quite a old version there.

    :)

Well, it's slightly dependant on what Nero App you are using, but at some point during the pre-burning/transcoding stages, there should be a tab, or menu that lets you select that burn speed.

What Nero App are you using? Nero Recode, Vision Express, Burning ROM?

Then you're not using Nero to burn directly - most likely Shrink is auto burning with Nero. So..

What exactly are you backing up? Which version of shrink do you have; 3.2?

Also, is the box in Edit > Preferences > File I/O > "Enable Burning With Nero" ticked?

forget my stupidity. i put a dvd in so that i could get to the backup part. there are 3 backup speeds..maximum 1.0x 2.0x and 2.4x
is this what needs to be changed and will i have to change it each time i burn?

Ok, well, that's not giving you a full list of burn speeds, so, what you can do, is on the first screen when you click backup, select..

"Create DVD Files: Hard Disk Folder"

Then, we can come to burn those files with Nero Burning ROM (and hopefully more burn speed options) in a minute.
