So today I've been trying to back up some of my older movies. I've been backing up movies for a while now without any real issues, but for some reason today I've been having issues with every movie, it will back up fine (using DVD Shrink 3.2), then when it goes to burn on Nero, I get an error at 0% saying error reading data. I was thinking perhaps my burner was crapping out, so I plugged in my brother's external burner to try that, and again ran into the same issue. I also tried to backup a movie, then after getting the nero error tried to open the files in dvd shrink3.2 and got an error that it couldn't open the folder. I uninstalled and re-installed both nero and DVD Shrink. Any ideas? Below is a copy of the error report from my last attempt, using my brother's external burner. Any ideas/suggestions would be awesome!

    Remove your serial number: 1A23-0009-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

    Before someone pirates it.

Do you have a different cable you could try with your Burner?

I don't. The first burner I tried is my own which is an internal burner, which I should have mentioned.

    Hi kregmo73
    Welcome to aD!
    Here's some suggestions for you.
Let's update your Nero to 6.6.0.18 - the last version of Shrink to autoburn w/ Shrink.
This may also help Nero fully recognize your drive - you also see this in the log:
Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1
Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder

    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2 (recode & vision)
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe
hmmm looks like you are way behind. 3.07 is the latest.
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2005
The firmware may help your drive recognizing the media you are using.
Right now all it sees is this: Media type: DVD+R
Usually the manufacturer id and media specific will be in the log also. Missing from yours.
What brand of media are your using?
Roxio and Nero don't always play well. Unisntall Roxio and run the clean tool.

Hey thanks for the suggestions binkie. I'm downloading all those updates now. To answer your question, I was first using a very cheap brand named Playo which I suspected might be the problem so I am now trying Imation which I have not had a problem with before, and that also has had the same issues.

Well kregmo73 I won't use either of those :) They may be part of the problem. Better to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell. After the firmware update try an id those Imation - they don't always use the best manufacturers. In Nero go to ToolKit>Info Tool>disc tab - the manufacturer should be listed.

The internal drive you tried may also need a firmware update. Looks like the TEAC from this log is a CD/DVD Rom drive.
You can check the same site from the link above with the make & model of the other drive and see if there is newer update.

Almost forgot this: Physical memory : 446MB
    Free physical memory: 99MB

Keep as much memory free as possible. No mulit tasking and shit down any unncessary processes.
I'd also do a system defrag and disc clean up too.
    Keep us posted!

editted to add: Has anything changed since you were last able to burn?

Thanks for the info again Binkie. I'm elated with how helpful you have been so far. I'll work on getting those updates in. Im curious how I would find a firmware update for my internal drive. If i install that firmware update you suggested for the external drive, that won't effect my internal drive in any way will it?

Oh no not another read error.
Okay so I guess the 1st download was ok?
For the 2nd one - delete it and re download. Try again. Did you already have Recode and Vision previously?

For the TEAC - I can't find diddly on this drive or anything worthwhile.
To do the firmware update on the external make sure it's connected 1st.
It shouldn't effect your internal. Make sure no discs are in the drive you are updating and power is on. No other programs running. Only takes a few minutes.

Ok so I deleted and re-downloaded the 2nd update, another read error :( Another update - I plugged in my friend's external burner to see if by some coincidence both my drive and my brother's external drive were crapping out, and no luck there either. I also then tried my brother's external drive on my friend's laptop and it worked flawlessly. This leads me to be pretty confident it's a problem on my computer.

Yep kregmo73 it's looking like your pc.
So what's changed on your pc?
Try these to clean things up a bit:
    °System defrag
    °Disc cleanup
    °Virus scan
    °Spyware scan like Spysweeper
    °Registry cleaner (free one: http://www.ccleaner.com/)

Sounds good, I'll run all those tonight and see what happens. It definitely seems like the error is happening during the backing up or copying the files onto the laptop rather than the actual burn. Thanks for your help, I'll check in later once all those scans are done.

    No problemo :)
Yes it sounds like something ain't right on the pc/lappy.
Esp. if you get a read error during an install.
Hopefully we can get this sorted out.

    Hi kregmo73
Still need to free up some memory - no multi tasking and shut down unnecessary processes - even disconnect from internet and shut down anti virus etc.
Now the media - MBI - Moser Baer - not good either. Slow that burn speed down to 4x max on these.
Better still pick up better media.

The last log is showing more media related errors: SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND quite a few of these.

I would also try burning w/ dvd decrypter instead of Nero w/ Shrink.

Has anything changed since you were last able to burn?

During the last burn I wasn't doing anything on my computer besides burning, so I'm surprised at how much memory was in use. I tried to clsoe out everything that I knew I didnt need but I'm afraid to accidentaly close down something I shouldn't. I don't suppose there's a way to find out what programs I can and can't close down? I'll try completing disconnecting from online and disabling my anti virus.
Also, how do I slow down the burning speed when it auto-burns with Nero after DVD Shrink? It always automatically goes to 8x burn speed.
Finally, how do you burn using DVD Decrypter? I have the program and I usually use it to decrypt a movie that has copy protection errors, then open the files with DVD Shrink to shrink it and then burn with nero. Thanks.
