Have you tried 6887 as your symbol rate?

    Hi scouser

I have seen the post on page 1 about checking the port in device manager. There is no "port" section listed under my device manager, which I'm thinking could be part of the problem! Should there always be a port section?

Once the USB adapter is plugged in you should see it. Without getting into envirnomentals and hidden settings in XP device manager, do you know someone with a desktop? If so use this and take the adapter out of the equation. Can you show me a link of your adapter please?

I'm trying to do this on a desktop. Even when the adapter is connected no port section shows up in device manager. Here's what the adapter looks like- http://www.satandcable.co.uk/s/images/USB_To_Serial_Adapter.jpg. Is it most likely to be a problem with the adapter or the computer? I have a laptop I could try it on but I will still need to use the adapter.

Sorry your link is dead. Why are you using an adapter on a desktop? Does it not have a D9 serial port where you can just use the null modem cable without an adapter?

I see but are you are using a combination of a null modem cable and the USB adapter you have above?

I'm using the Female to Female Serial Null Modem Cable shown on page 1 of the forum with the adapter. My computer doesn't recognise the adapter tho. When i plug it into the USB port a thing pops up saying the device isn;t recognised. It also says no driver has been installed for it even though it has been

Thanks for your help scouser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver several times but the adapter is still not recognised by the computer. I'll try it on the laptop and hope for the best!

hey guys, was wondering if you could help. I bought the USB converter, installed the driver, when i open the software for the ex5000 it only shows 4 COM ports, when i look in the device manager, i am connected to COM 6-7-8- & 9, so it will not recognise the connection.

Any ideas? I have tried this on both Vista and XP computers :(

have a read courtesy of celtic71 To see which port your USB adapter is connected to, connect your USB adapter and follow the following instructions:

    1. Go to the Start Menu
    2. Right click on "My Computer"
    3. Select "Properties"
    4. Click on the "Hardware" tab
    5. Click on "Device Manager"
    6. Click the + sign next to "Ports (COM & LPT)"
    7. One of the listed ports should indicate which port your USB adapter is connected to (e.g. COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.)
    8. Go back to your map software program that you use to transfer data and make sure it is looking at the correct port.
    9. You should be able to transfer data once the correct port is selected

If you need drivers go here

    http://www.gilsson.com/usb_drivers_download.htm

Follow my advice to step 7. Locate your USB Adapter (port *)

Right click on that port and select properties. Then select port settings, then select advanced. At the bottom of that tab will be a drop down box with the port selected (port * in your case). Use the drop down to select another port (eg 1, 2 or 3). If the port you want to use is already allocated to something else, you can use the same procedure to reassign that port after you have finished.
Save the selections in the usual way. The USB converter will be permanently assigned to the port you selected.

Hi again anyone who can help me! I've installed the driver for the USB converter but it doesn't show up under ports in the device manager. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it several times and it still doesn't show up. The computer continues to say that it doesn't recognise the device. Am i somehow not installing the driver right or is there a problem with the adapter or what could be wrong? I've tried the adapter and driver on 2 computers and it doesn't work on either. I'm slowly going mad...
