I guess my only concern would be if the drive will booktype to DVD-ROM, for the reason that I have 2 standalone players that will not play +R discs, but of course booktyped to DVD-ROM they play without a hitch. Best regards, Rich
Hummm I'm not familiar with booktyping ..... I'll have to look that one up, but let me get this straight because only one of my stand alone dvd players will play +R and not that well. If I booktype (must find out what that means) to DVD rom I will be able to play + or - R on my old dvd players? How do I find out if my drive can do this booktyping thing? Thanks
Spirittoo: Booktyping can only be performed with burners with that capability. Drives such as Benq/lite-on/plextor/lg/ricoh have this ability. You may have to use a certain burn program or utility, but the latest models should have that capability. Some sony drives can booktype. Some of the sony drives are re-badged lite-ons. I know the dru-700/710/and 800 are rebadged liteys. Nec and pioneer can booktype through hacked firmware. Booktyping is the changing of the plus format to dvd-rom. This booktyping actually fools some of those picky players into recognizing backups.Stand alone players will think they are dvd-rom,the more universal format. It also gives you a third format to mess around with. With dvd backups, stand alones can be very picky as to what they will read. If you play your backups on a lot of stand alone players/game consoles/and pc drives, then booktyping is a huge asset. If just a couple stand alone players, then booktyping is no biggie.Just another option to have when fighting the compatability war between stand alones. I swear by it. My booktyped backups outperform my dash backups by a landslide. I don't even bother with the dash anymore.
spirittoo, saugmon, did an excellent job of describing booktyping, however, just to be clear on your question, no, booktyping will not work for -R, only for +R discs, and booktyping only occurs when you are burning a new disc. Hope that is clear, Rich
Thanks for the replies .... I've been looking though the forum for informatiion. I realize booktyping is a feature I would like to have. I'm trying to determine if the DRU-800A and DRU-810A can do booktype and if so what program can I use so I can booktype to dvd-rom using decrypter. I see that nero can do it, but it will only do it when burning with nero and I prefer decrypter to burn. I'm going to check out the other programs out there and see if any of them can allow me to change booktype. If you know how to do that please post. In the meantime I will check around and see what I can find. Thanks again for your time. Update ...... I found the info and I can change the booktype in Decrypter .... I just have to use the Lite-on tab ..... down part is I have to check it each time before I burn. I saw somewhere that you can change the bookmark with dics that have already been burned. Is that possible and what program would I need to do that? I keep checking on that in the meantime. Thanks.
No, that is not possible, you have to have your burner booktyped prior to burning, you cannot booktype after the fact. And BTW, I have that same problem...many of my discs that were burnt prior to booktyping will not play on 2 of my standalone players. One of them is a very expenisve player, a Bravo V1, at the time. I hope that is clear, Rich
Yes I realize that now .... when I went back and re read the article it stated the media was +RW. Wow .... I wish I had found out sooner ..... now I have well over 50 copies that won't work in my one older machine. It will play somewhat on my old samsung but not nearly as well when it is booktype DVD-Rom. But at least I know now .... and that the sony DRU-810A is the same as the 800A except for the DL speed so it will have booktype setting too. Thanks for all you info. You've been a great help.
Sony DRU 800 can booktype using this utility, not sure about the dru 810?: http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm Here's a site that lists all the sony drives that are re-badged liteys, and also has the firmware updates: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html spiritoo: Double check your firmware version. That site said KY06 on the sony DRU-800A. Let us know what firmware version you have.
I just wanted to let all you good folks that help me with my burner, know that I sent the defective one back to newegg. I had to wait a couple of days after they recieved it while they tested the drive to confirm it was defective. Once that was done they sent me a replacement. I got it today and it was a matter of plug and play. I have updated the firmware and have burn a couple of disc .... no problems! If it's anything like it's sister the 800A it will be a fine burner. Thanks again for all your help.
