Video noise is any visual addition that wasn’t a part of the original video. Good examples are some of the older rock concerts that were filmed with earlier video cameras in low light conditions. It can affect video quality by adding a grainy appearance to it. This type of noise is often found in some older movies or TV shows such as Star Trek. Another type of video noise is the mosquito effect which is found in highly compressed newer movies, you'll also see that happen in your highly compressed backups as well.

Jdobbs - Thanks for the reply and the fix. I was starting to wonder what the heck I was doing. I will give it a try and post again.

So there is 'softening' of video output (???) and I should "leave it alone" regarding DVD Shrink <sounds like I'm out of the loop on that one>. . . or reauthor and rip at no compression with DVD Shrink and then use DVD-RB. I never knew Shrink to decrypt a DVD!!! Sounds like a plan but with all the new options built into 1.0 pro I probably will only use Shrink to enable all user options and disable menu locks.

Shrink can rip at the no compression setting, however Decrypter is free and a dedicated ripper. That's why I wonder about using Shrink as a ripper. Both are free. Shrink's last update was over a year ago. So the decryption updates ended then. Decrypter was only recently abandoned. Also, there are other good decryption tools. AnyDVD which is a forum favorite is probably the best as far as being kept updated. Even back in the day, the instructions were to use Decrypter when Shrink failed to rip. Getting the picture yet?

The main purpose for Shrink is as a transcoder. So, why the hell use a transcoder when you have one of the best encoder apps available in use, RB/CCE? About the only utilities Shrink may have that can be useful are the editing. I even question that as RB eliminates unwanted sound tracks and language options with its own settings. The Pro has even more editing options. Add to that the ability to compress at high levels and little to no editing is required. Too many people got into the editing habit with the regular transcoding apps and feel they have to carry the practice over to RB.

If you want to use Shrink, from what Sophocles said earlier, one time through Shrink and the "softening" occurrs, irregardless of the usage. Your choice, if using Shrink makes you happy, go right ahead. You'll get a decent video output and hopefully you'll notice no difference in the contrast. Just seems redundant and a waste of time. As for time, I did a movie with Shrink just recently doing a test. It took about 2 hours with the deep analysis and quality settings in use. Without those, Shrink doesn't even compare. Compare the transcoding time of Shrink to RB/CCE and you'll probably notice little difference.

Don't get me wrong, Shrink is one of the better freeware apps available. However, I'm not destitute, not yet anyway. Point being, I can afford to buy a few programs that make doing backups a bit easier and better and have done so. Shrink is a decent freeware, but can't compare to RB/CCE.

I am still new to dvd-rb and had been trying to read alot about the best ways to use this program.I was suggesting the using of shrink to reauthor from threads that I had read and with the thought that the less you have to compress the better the final will be.I had been doing it this way but tonight i backed up 12 monkeys without shrink and saw that dvd-rb does not need the help with compression.Using the movie and menu only does a great job if you don't want the extra's.Using shrink does seem reduntant to me now thankyou for pointing this out,it was a extra step in the process for me that did not benefit the purpose.I used the HC mode on best setting and love the finished backup.Sorry if I caused confusion with suggesting shrink to reauthor.

No problem. Guess it gave a break to point out to beginners what a powerful tool RB can be. If you like the HC encoder, you'd probably like the CCE even better.

If you decide you do want to keep some extras besides the movie and menu but don't want all the previews adverts and warning screens I highly recommend DVDRemake to edit. I use it on every backup. http://www.dimadsoft.com/products.php

Or if you're lucky enough to be using AnyDVD, just click off the adverts and trailers in the navigation section and go directly to the menu.

Ok, credits are still flipping between French and English versions using PowerDVD. Sizes are also better, shown below:

    VTS_01_1.VOB 1048574 KB
    VTS_01_2.VOB 1048574 KB
    VTS_01_3.VOB 1048574 KB
    VTS_01_4.VOB 986280 KB
    VTS_01_5.VOB 425766 KB

Is there a way to turn off the interleaving of the different versions of the movie?

Just a creature of habit I guess.I am just so used to reauthoring my movies to reduce the amout of video for less compression.I have anydvd and had forgotten that it can jump right to the movie. The one thing I did not like about reauthoring was that i would lose the menu options. With DVD-RB I now know that reauthoring is not as important to the quality of the finished movie as it once was for me and using movie and menu's only works great for me.It is nice to be able to keep the menu's and thankyou once again for pointing out the error of my ways and reducing the steps to a sucessful backup.

    mace,

You're welcome. I think you will like remake. I know I do and put it right up there with CCE as money well spent.

Mort is right. DVDReMake is a good program for the money. I've had it for a long time now. Unfortunately, RB/CCE does such a good, I rarely have occasion to use it.

Does ILVU_PREVENT_VTS_CROSSING=1 need to be retained under options with the new rc4 release?

Well I used this feature once when I had a free trial of AnyDVD going and it left my backup of Finding Nemo unreadable on PowerDVD, WMP & just about any player. I had to use Pgc Edit to tell the disc to start at the menu. Just about any Disney DVD has a bunch of ads, trailers, previews so that'll be a good test for AnyDVD. ;-)

    Bad Quality issue

Hi, I have tried to copy Dances with wolfes (extended Director's cut), I made a acceptable copy with DVDShrink (maximum smoothness)
when keeping only one audio track, original menu and one subtitle.

I read so much about the brilliance of CCE..so I decided to try
RB-CCE combination to do a version with menu and 2 audio tracks.

I worked with standard settings first, 25 and 16, 2 passes under
advanced settings but the output result was just poor, I did
a second run with worths 10 and 16 using 4 passes.

It took 7 hours to recode the result is better than the first
try but still much worser than the DVDShrink version.

Is there a possibility to improve the quality or is shrink
    really better than CCE?

I've been using the HC mode with DVD-RB with the one pass CQ VBR with analysis and best quality settings and have had great results.IT does a movie in about 3-4 hours and the picture is very clear.I'll probably get mad replys for saying this but in my opionion HC is as good as cce.

No -- you don't really need it, but it won't hurt anything. I've tested the ILVU crossing VOB files on multiple players -- and it always works. I've also been researching the requirement... and (although I know I remember it from somewhere), I can't find it. I have found the requirement that it not cross layers -- but that doesn't apply to DVD-5.

    @frisk

The quality difference should be intuitively obvious to the casual observer. It should be much better. If you aren't seeing it then something is configured wrong. What encoder are you using?

You can do smoothing with DVD-RB as well using AVISYNTH filters -- but you shouldn't have to. Smoothing isn't really a good thing, it removes detail and trades pixelation for blurring.
