    I am still seeing strange results where the final VOB file always flips back and forth between the foreign and english versions. Both of these movies have had problems with playback after versions RC2,RC3, and now RC4. I am using PowerDVD for testing. Need some help with these but not sure what to do.

    @jdobbs

    I am using CCE SP Ver. 2.70.02.00 and RB ver.093

    Are there any setting I can change in RB others than
    the advanced expert settings?

    I have just done another copy with VBR Bias = 5, Quality Prec. 16,
    4 passes

    it tooked another 7 hours the result is the same...copy is in
    dark scenes unwatchable, heaviest macroblocking I ever have seen.

    What disc are you trying to do? Is it easy to find and is it NTSC, R1?

    @mace71299

    what version of RB are you using?

    which one do I have to use for HC mode...mine Ver. 093
    doesn't have HC mode

    I have just downloaded HC encoder 0.15a and will give it a try

    Wasn't that one a two-disc set? Have you merged the two discs and tried to make it all fit on one?

    Four hours is a lot for a DVD-5... even with CCE.

    frisk,
    I am using pro edition v1.00 RC3 with the HC mode.I did braveheart and the green mile and watched them on my friends projector and it looked really nice.I only do the movie and menu's and get rid of the previews and extra's that i never watch.The 1 pass with analysis has not failed me yet.Good luck.

    I have PowerDVD and WinDVD and they play well with those options on AnyDVD checked (skip adverts and trailers and jump to menu). Haven't had a problem yet and it works well on the standalone players as well.

    jdobbs,
    I thought dropping the bias low, 5 in frisk's case, was detrimental to the video output. Am I wrong and that setting easily variable over a wide range?

    I must agree with you on the quality of RB/CCE compared to Shrink. If RB/CCE isn't better, then someone has something set up improperly. I'm familiar enough with both apps to realize the difference.

    frisk
    I realize RB/CCE is slow, but 7 hours for 4 passes with SP is a bit long. What kind of system are you using to do your encoding?

    @jdobbs
    no, it was single disc only

    @mace71299
    thanks, maybe I give pro edition v1.00 RC3 with the HC mode a try too

    @brobear
    i was dropping the bias low from 25 to 5 stepwise, best result
    I made with bias 10 (but heavy macroblocks in dark scenes at
    around 3 hours of movie)

    I agree that maybe I set up improperly something, but what else
    can I do in RB than changing these two values?

    System I use is a Pentium 4, 2,8ghz, 512MBRam, 160GB HD free space.

    Well I used this feature once when I had a free trial of AnyDVD going and it left my backup of Finding Nemo unreadable on PowerDVD, WMP & just about any player. I had to use Pgc Edit to tell the disc to start at the menu. Just about any Disney DVD has a bunch of ads, trailers, previews so that'll be a good test for AnyDVD. ;-)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    this problem existed only in one of the first AnyDVD version
    when this feature has been introduced, and really especially
    Disney DVD's where having problems...but this problem is solved
    for ages already... so with latest AnyDVD 5.3.2.1 this problem
    does not exist anymore

    Actually going lower really doesn't really hurt the picture much because it makes for a wider variance between complex and simple scenes. But what it can do (when it gets too low) is cause wild bitrate swings that can possibly cause the DVD to go out of spec...

    Going higher can definitely hurt picture quality -- especially when you get above 40 (on the 0-64 scale) or so... it becomes more like CBR and a lot of bits get wasted on the simple stuff.

    You aren't trying to play the VOB file directly, are you?
    If you are, you can't... You can use Power DVD but you must use the "Play DVD from folder" (or something similar) to test your DVD... if you play an ILVU VOB file directly you will always get a strange behaviour.

    I made a new copy using HC encoder with Quenc mode in RB v.093 (free)

    I choosed Trelis quantizizer (2pass) - The result is the 2nd best
    so far, really close to what i got with Shrink but in dark
    scenes still some macroblocking...not this much like with CCE
    but still more than with Shrink

    Next try is HC Encoder with undot and deen filters used

    frisk,

    There is definitely something wrong with your DVD-RB setup because dvd shrink doesn't even compare to DVD-RB/CCE. Hopefully one of the guys here can get you sorted out so you can experience the benefits of DVD-RB/CCE.

    rockas - Ok, thanks. I see it behaving now. I still have a few questions about this issue because I have never come across this problem before. Should I even care?

    1. Why do the foreign parts of the film even still exist within the VOB files? Isn't this taking up precious space in the overall product size? Can these parts be stripped out someway, perhaps with DVDReMake?

    2. Why is the file sizing structure different than anything I have seen before? For example, the final output for Whitesquall using RC4 is:

    VTS_01_1.VOB 1048574 KB
    VTS_01_2.VOB 1048574 KB
    VTS_01_3.VOB 1048574 KB
    VTS_01_4.VOB 567322 KB
    VTS_01_5.VOB 847376 KB

    3. Why does this problem only present itself on the last VOB file?

    @Mort81

    I guess the problem hasn't much to do with the settings,
    biggest problem is most probably the quality of the
    original DVD itself.

    It's the first DVD for which I wasn't fully happy with
    the copy I made with Shrink, until yet Shrink produced
    a quality wich was ok for me.

    As I read a lot of CCE and that it would be so much better
    than Shrink, I have tried it with this only problematic
    disk I have but the result was terrible bad.

    I have just checked the bit rates of the original disk
    and they are between 2400 and 3100 only during these
    dark scenes that creating problems when using CCE or HC encoder.

    But anyway...i was able to do a preety good copy with Shrink
    when using maximum smoothness mode,
    (this is the only disk where maximum smoothness created better
    results for me than maximum sharpness) and I hoped
    CCE and HC would bring the same quality at least....

    Is there a possibility to set up CCE or HC encoder so that
    they leave untouched original material that is below a bitrate
    of 3000?

    All this talk about Dances With Wolves and I don't have the extended version. Curious as to what they added in the additional scenes. To get it,I'll have to place an order. The pack train into the hills is a bit slow. So, when I get to my backup, it will probably be too late to have any relevance to this discussion. However, you will probably hear from me if I run into trouble. LOL

    It will be a different region and format from the one shown in the link, however the play time is the same. I noticed the DVD has Deutsch and English audio tracks, are you eliminating one of those or keeping both?

    jdobbs,
    Would the difference in format, NTSC and PAL, make a difference?
