I doubled my RAM up from 512MB to 1GB... it didn't change the speed at all.

Oh well. I guess I'll have to buy a better processor when I grow up.

If it's any consolation when you do get a dual core with a decent amount of memory and a reasonably decent clock speed, your average encode times should be around an hour and the encode speeds will rise to about 5.6X to more than 6X. I suspect that larger amounts of memory is better served on dual core systems.

A lot also depends on how much programming runs in the background with the OS. Just idling along, my system uses about 335MB. If I only had 512MB, that would only leave 177MB to use for encoding. It might work, but in that scenario, the lack of memory would probably slow the processor down. Before I upped the RAM on my system, the encoding took about all the system resources. If I tried to open another application, I'd have to wait till the system allocated the resources. It was a noticable lag. Now I can open programs and surf the web if I want to and no waiting like before. So, for a loaded XP system, I suggest 1GB or more of RAM in order to have a good reserve.

I'm a couple of hours late, but hope you had a good one. Well, it's still your birthday on the West Coast.

    Hi folks

    a question if I may...

I'm trying to backup an MMA DVD9 to DVD5. All my attempts so far have resulted in a pretty blocky, blurry image.

The source VTS is 7,555 Mb and my "Space for Video" is 3,768 Mb - so reduction level is 51.3%.

Can anyone who has had success in backup of sports DVDs give me a suggestion of which settings to use for VBR Bias and/or Qual Prec???

    Thanks if you can!!

Lastly, is it possible to use DVD RB to convert an NTSC dvd (menus and all) to PAL DVD??

    Ptwenty

How long (in terms of hours) is the source? Also, what bitrate is DVD-RB having to apply? There are some rare original sources that have already stretched the available space to its limit...

DVD-RB does not convert NTSC to PAL.

    I'm a littel confused.

What do you mean by space for Video is 3,768 mb. Is this the your target size or is this the space left on your hard drive for video?

For those who have come to this thread for help and for those who came to help, I thank you. With no one to assist along the path to learning teachers would have no purpose. Schools don't make teachers, teachers make schools, for without teachers there can be no place of learning. I will now unsubscribe from this thread.

Sophocles, are you seriously unsubscribing for being asked to comply with the forum rules?

Come on man, continue with this. If addicts, mods, seniors and staff don't comply with the rules, then who is setting the example?

Could have picked someone better than Hitler to quote, after all, we kicked his ass in WW2. Schools are prisons, always were, always will be. Afterdawn isn't a school, in the broadest sense of the term, but a place to come and learn, help, etc at your own pace, we don't have a curriculum to stick to.

I'm probably going to get spanked but this is becoming rediculous. I saw nothing distracting about Sophs sig. Ok maybe it had more than 5 lines but they were short sentences and didn't go clear across the page. Soph is one of the most trusted, intelegent, and respected members of this forum. I personally feel he has earned the right to bend the rules a little. He imho should have been a mod a long time ago.

At this rate there won't be any knowledgable ppl left to help members with their questions or problems.

Surely rules are set so no-one can step out of line ? Thought that was the point of them

So be it. I know where Soph resides and he is always quick with an educated and trustworthy answer if I ever need help or just an opinion. I'm quickly losing interest here.

You guys seem to run off the best minds.
Might as well close this thread to. Unsubscibed.
